SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,109, dated January 23, 1883.

T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ()YLER, a citizen of the United States, and a residentot' Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,and exactdescription of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view. Fig. 2 is an elevation.
This invention relates to a farm or road gate which is unlocked and opened by an approaching vehicle, and which is closed and locked by the vehicle after it has passed through the gateway.
In the drawings, A indicates the gate, which is pivotally supported upon a post, B. This post passes through an opening in the lower rail, a, of the gate, and has its upper end received in a socket in the upper rail, a. This upper rail is secured upon the vertical bars 0. to which the horizontal slats or rails are attached, and to a third vertical bar, a which is located between the top and bottom rails, on the side of the post opposite to that on which the main body of the gate hangs. The upper rail has an extension, at, which constitutes a counter-balance for the gate, and, if required, this counter-balance can be Weighted in any suitableway. A washer, G, is fitted upon the post, just above the lower rail, so as to prevent the gate from being lifted. A horizontal latch, D, is pivoted upon a post in position to lock the gate when the latter is closed.
The devices for operating the gate and the latch areas follows: At each side of the gate are arranged two rock-shafts, which cross the road at suitable distances from the gate, so as The outer rock-shafts, E, or those farthest from the gate, are employed for operating the latch, whilethe inner rock-shafts, F, or those nearest to the gate, are for the purpose of operating the gate after the latch has been actuated. The rockshafts Iii are each formed with two crankbends, e, which are at or about at right angles to each other, so that when one crank-bend is down the remaining crank-bend of the rockshaft will be up. Each of said rock-shafts E is also provided with a crank-arm, c, connected with the latch by a rod, F, these two rods being respectively connected with the latch at opposite sides of its pivotal point. The rockshat'ts F are each provided with two like crankbends, f, formed atright angles to each other; and they are also each provided with a crank arni,f, connected with the gate by a rod, G, the said two rods being respectively connected with the lower rail at opposite sides of the post. In this way as a vehicle approaches the gate it will first run over the upright or standing crank-bend of the rock-shaft E, so as to depress the same and release the latch from the gate, and it willthen runover and depress the raised crank-bend ot' the rock-shaft F on this side of the gate, so as to openthe latter. After passing by the gate, the vehicle will run over one of the crank-bends ot' the rock-shaft F on such side of the gate so as to close the latter,
after which it will run over and depress the raised crank-bend of one of the rock-shafts E, so as to operate the latch and cause it to lock the gate. It will be seen that when one crankbend of a shaft is depressed the remaining crank-bend thereof is raised, and hence that one of the crank-bends will always be in position to be acted upon by the wheels ofa vehicle.
