SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,069, dated January 23, 1883.

Application filed July 3, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN HOAGLAND, of the city and county of Providence, and State of i Rhode Island, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Bars for Watch-Chains; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

1o This invention has reference to an improvement in bars secured to the ends of watch and other ornamental chains; and it consists in providing such bars with a convenient receptacle for tooth-picks, combined with a holder r 5 for the same, which holderis constructed to be inserted into the tubular case, as will be more fully set forth*"hereinafter.

with a screw-thread, is drawn, so as to force the same together, and thus secure the toothick. P To firmly hold the tooth-pick, the pointed 5 end is inserted into the fork of the piecef, as is shown in Fig. 4, and the broad central portion is clamped between the clamps ee. A tooth-pick may therefore be quickly inserted or removed by turning the slceveg so as to release the clamps, and secured by turning the sleeve so as to force the clamps together.

The clam ps 0 e, bifurcated piece f, and screwed sleeve 1 constitute the tooth-pick holder, which is ordinarily covered and concealed 5 from view by the removable end of the case A. When it is desired to use the tooth-pick this end or section of the case is removed, thus exposing the tooth pick.

The sleeve 9 is preferably drawn with small longitudinal ribs or, is otherwise milled or roughened, so as to present a good holding-surface for turning the same, and is made so as to form a tight lit in the case A when inserted, the whole forming a new, convenient, and desirable article of manufacture.

Having ihusdescribed my invention, I clain as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A bar for watch-chains, consisting of the tubular case A and the receptacle 1D, havinga 7o screw-cap, U, at one end and at the other a tooth-pick holder adapted to be inserted in the tubular case, substantially as described.

2. The combination. with the tubular case A, of the receptacle D, closed at the end by a screw-cap, and the tooth-pick holder consist ihg of the bifurcated piece f, clamps e e, and sleeve 9, substantially as described.
