Application filed September 26, 1922. Serial No. 590,670.
- cles of jewelry.
The invention is similar to that embodied in my co-pending application, Serial No. 590,669, filed September 26, 1922.
Broadly speaking the invention contemplates a clasp including a pair of members, one of which is adapted to receive the other and within which former member means is arranged for coacting engagement with the other member to lock and retain said members against separation together with exteriorly exposed means for releasing the locking means.
As an object the invention seeks to pro vide an extremely simple, inexpensive and minute clasp embodying the features of strength durability and facility of operation.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein tothe full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a clasp constructed in accordance with the invention with the cover plate removed.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the clasp with the cover plate in position.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference 10 and 11 designate respectively a pair of clasp elements each of which is designed to be associated with the opposite extremities of a necklace, bracelet or other similar article of jewelry. The clasp member lO consists of a hollow body provided with an opening 12 in one of its end walls, the opposite end wall being provided 1 with exteriorly disposed eyes topermit of the association of said member with the artiale to which it is to be applied. A pair of clamping levers 14 are pivoted as at 15 within the hollow body of the member 10 and the same are provided at the extremities adjacent the opening 12wit-h clamping jaws 16 which are normally advanced toward each other under the action of a spring 17 interposed between the opposite extremities of the levers. The bottom wall 18' of the member 10 is provided with longitudinally spaced apertures 19 at the transverse center thereof. A cover plate 20 is provided with similarly arranged apertures 21 which are of slightly greater diameter than the apertures 19 and disposed in axial alignment therewith when the cover plate is burnished, soldered, or otherwise secured in position on the hollow body. A pair of inverted frusto-conical sleeves 22, the interior diameters of which at the upper and lower edge conform to the diameter of the openings 21 and 19, are interposed between the wall 18 and the cover plate in alignment with the penings and the upper openings 21 are designed to constitute pockets for the setting of precious or semi-precious stones 23. The arrangement of the sleeves are such that the rear ends of the levers 14 are disposed and movable between the side walls 24: and the opposite sides of the rearmost sleeve 22 while the forwardextremities of the levers are disposed and movable between the side walls 24 and the opposite sides of the foremost sleeve 22. The foremost sleeve serves as a stop for limiting the advancement of the jaws 16 toward each other. The clasp member 11 consists of a fiat bar or tongue provided with a reduced head 25 having laterally projecting ears 26. The outer end of the head is concave or provided with an arcuate depression 27 which is inclined downwardly and outwardly to conform to and closely fit the periphery of the foremost sleeve 22 after the head has been inserted through the opening and the ears 26 are disposed behind the locking jaws 16. The opposite extremities or rear ends of the levers 14: are provided with laterally projecting headed studs 28 which project through openings 29 prising a casing having an opening in one.
end, a pair of levers pivotally mounted therein having complementary clamping jaws at one extremity adjacent the opening in the end of the casing, means normally urging said jaws together, a coupling member adapted to be engaged by the jaws upon insertion in the open end of the casing, and a member fixed in the casing between. the levers and forming an abutment point for the coupling member and jaws, at which point said jaws and coupling member will interengage to lock the clasp.
2. j A clasp of the character described comprising a casing having an opening at one end, a pair of levers pivotally mounted therein and having complementary clamping jaws at one, extremity adjacent the opening in the end of the casing, a member vertically mounted in the casing adjacent the jaws and forming a limit to their movement, a coupling adapted to contact with said member, at which point it will interengage with the jaws, a second member fixed in the casing between the rear portions of the levers, and a spring mounted around said member normally urging the lever jaws toward each other against the forward member.
3. A clasp comprising a casing having an open end, a pair of levers pivoted therein having complemetary clamping aws adjacent the open end, a pair of jewel mounting tubes vertically fixed through the casing between the levers and on opposite sides of the pivot points thereof, the forward tube forming a limit to the movement of the jaws, a coupling member adapted to contact with said forward tube upon insertion into the casing, and a spring mounted between the levers adjacent the rear tube normally urging the jaws towards each other and against the forward tube.
