Description

W. H. WHTTEMORE in G. MLLER.
EAR RING.
Patented Oct. 28, 1890.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES? PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM HENRY VIIITTEMORE AND GOTTLIEB MLLER, OF NElVARK, NEV JERSEY.
EAR-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,457, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed November 30, 1889. Serial No. 332,068. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that we, VILLIAM HENRY WHITTEMORE and GOTTLIEB MLLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Fastening Ear- Rings, (he, and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part 0f this specification.
This invention relates to means for securing an ear knob or jewel in the ear-lobe principally, but may be used for other purposes,
such as jewelcd studs, buttons, the.
The invention consists in a setting having a wire projecting from the back thereof which is adapted to carry a follower of peculiar construction, the use of the follower1 being to secure the knob or jewel in place and take the place of a nut and threaded shank now in use on this class of jewelry, whereby this class of devices is simplified and cheapened and adapted to be readily removed and adjusted to place.
The invention further consists of the novel features, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of an article of jewelry, showing the application of our invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the follower. Fig. at is a detail view of the retaining-spring. Fig. 5 is a side view of an article of jewelry. Fig. G is a side view showing the stein serrated or notched. Fig. 7 is a side view showing the stem spirally recessed or threaded.
In constructing the fastening device a shank or stern ct is provided upon the back of the article of jewelry A, on which the follower B is adapted to move, said follower having a recess b to hold a spiral spring C, which is wound on an arbor a little smaller than the size of the stem or shank a, so that when the follower slides on said stem or shank the spring will hold the follower on the stem by reason of its tension and requires considerable force to remove it. The stem maybe plain or serrated, as shown in Fig. G, or may have a recess or thread to conform to the shape of the spring. Then the stem is plain, the spring retains the follower in place by reason of its tension at any place on the wire. Vhen the wire is serrated, the ends of the spring may clasp the Serrat-ions, and when the wire is recessed, as in Fig. 7, the spring sinks into the recess, and thereby retains the article firmly in place.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi
l. The combination, with the article A, having stem o., of the follower B and the spiral spring C 0f less area than said stem and adapted to clasp stem a with suiiicient tension to hold the follower thereon, substantially as described..
2. The combination, with the article A, having stem a, of the followerB, having recess b, and the spiral spring C, located in the said recess and of smaller area than stem o. to bind on the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY WlIlT'lEllORE. GOTTLIEB MLLER. lVitnesses:
M. J. LEDWITH, HARRY CAMPTON.
