Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' FRANK O. AYER, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
REIN AND WHIP HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 271,016, dated January 23, 1853.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK O. AYER, of 00- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Combined Rein and Whip Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the combined holder for the reins and for the whip as an attachment for vehicle-dashes; and the specific matter of my improvement consists in the peculiar construction of a plate-spring, which serves, in connection with the whip-socket, as a holder for the reins and a holder for the whip, the construction being such that both together may be held by the spring or independent of each other.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in elevation the combined holder for the reins and for the whip; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same; Fig. 3, the platespring in different positions; Fig. 4, a vertical section, showing a modification, and Fig. 5, the spring as used in the modification.
The socket A is preferably of sheet metal, with a wooden collar, A, suited to receive the handle of the whip. The socket is rigidly secured to ametal bar. 0, by clasps D D, so that the bar and the socket constitute the support for the spring, and their relation to each other.
is such that the spring may be attached to either and perform its function of both holding the reins or the whip separately or together. The bar 0 is concave on its outer side, and is rigidly secured to the dash-frame by clips 0 O".
The spring B is a steel plate, and has a straight clamping part, a, for the reins between the whip-socket and the bar (J, to either of which it can be attached by a return or lapping upper end, b, while its lower part, c,is passed through an opening, 0, in the side of the socket and bent so as to clamp the whiphandle within the socket. As'shown in Fig. 2,
the spring is bent down ward in the socket with a short bend, d, where it passes into the socket. The spring is set soas to press inward toward or against the outer side of the socket at the opening 0, so that when the spring is attached to the upper end of the bar C it forms a clamp Application filed May 31. 1882. (Model) for the reins against the outer side ot'thesooket, the spring being pressed away from the socket to receive the reins. This pressing away ofthe spring causes its inner bend to bear upon the lower edge of the opening 0, so that the bandie of the whip, compressing the inner part of the spring, is thereby held. By this construction the reins or the whip may be held independent of each other. In Fig. 4 the spring is secured by its return or lapping end to the whip-socket, and its inner end is bent upward to near the upper endof the socket; but the holding action of this form upon the reins and upon the whip-handle is the same, either together or separately, the reins in this case being clamped against the bar 0. In either form of spring its outer and its inner bearing parts cooperate with the socket and with the bar 0, for the purpose stated, in which the reins may be held without placing the whip in the socket. The rein-holding part of the spring has a biting-rib, E, to prevent slipping of the reins.
I claim- 1. The combination, substantially as herein described, of the socket A, having the side opening, a, and the bar 0, with the plate-spring secured at its upper end at a point outside of said socket and between it and said bar, forming an exterior clamping rein-holder, and extending into said socket to form an independent clamp and holder for the whip, the said exterior and interior parts of the spring servin g as clamps separately or together.
2..The plate-spring B, having the upper return or lapping end, I), the gripping ribbed part a, and the clamping bent part c, constructed substantially as described and combined with the whip-socket, the rein-holding part of said spring being arranged between the socket and its supporting-bar.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
