4 Claims. (Cl. 311-409) This invention relates to an improved desk or table structure.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved desk structure wherein a tubular supporting frame is provided with the elements of the frame welded or otherwise firmly secured together.
Another object of this invention is to provide a desk structure which will give free leg room and permit the student to conveniently use the desk top for writing or reading without shifting his seat and without eye-strain, and for convenient entrance or exit.
A further object of this invention is to provide a desk or table structure of this kind wherein the top is mounted by means of a multiple hinge so that the top may be angularly adjusted as may be desired.
In the preferred form of this invention, the tubular frame has mounted thereon a book box with a pair of pencil trays conveniently disposed at each end of the box and interposed between the box and the frame.
In a modified form of this invention the tubular frame has secured thereto a fiat desk top which is fixed in a substantially horizontal position.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings and first to Figures 1 to 10 inclusive, the numeral 15 designates generally a tubular frame structure which is formed of a pair ofrear legs generally indicated at 16, and a pair of front legs generally indicated at 17. The front legs 17- include upwardly inclined tubular members 18 which terminate at their upper ends in arcuate extensions 19, and the extensions 19 merge with horizontal extensions 20. The rear legs 16 include tubular members 21 extending convergently upwardly and terminating at their upper ends in arcuate extensions 22, and the extensions 22 merge with horizontal extensions 23.
A substantially truncated V-shaped connecting member generally indicated at 24 is connected to the horizon tal extensions 20 and 23 of the front and rear legs and includes a straight rear tubular member 25 with forwardly projecting side members 26. A split "T-shaped connector 27 is welded to the adjacent ends of the extensions 20 and 23 and the side members 26.
The front and rear legs 17 and 16 respectively are tied together at their upper ends by means of tubular tie members 28 which are welded to the arcuate extensions 19 and 22 of the front and rear legs.
A book box 29 is disposed on the top of the frame 15 and is preferably formed of metal and includes a bottom 30, side walls 31, and front and rear walls 32 and 33 respectively. The bottom wall 30 is formed with a downwardly offset bead 34 which overlies and is adapted to rest on the rear bar 25 of the truncated V-shaped member 24. Atop member 35 is hingedly secured to the book box 29 by means of a double hinge 36. The hinge 36 includes a leaf 37 which is fixed to the underside of the top 35 and also includes a leaf 38 which is fixed to the inner side of the rear wall 33. An intermediate leaf 39 is pivotally connected between the hinge leaves 37 and 38. The intermediate leaf 39 provides a means whereby the rear of the top 35 may be elevated so as to provide a convenient writing and reading position for the top.
The top 35 is latched in selected elevated position by means of a toothed latching member 40 which is fixed to the underside of the top 35 and is adapted to engage the upper edge of the front wall 32. There are two of these latching members 40 and each latching member 40 is provided with at least two downwardly projecting teeth for selective engagement with the front wall 32.
A cushion member 41 is secured to the underside of the top 35 adjacent each latching member 40 for engagement with the upper edge of the front wall 32 when the top 35 is in a horizontal position. A second elongated cushion member 42 is also secured to the underside of the top 35 and is adapted to engage the intermediate hinge leaf member 39 when the top 35 is in a horizontal position.
A pencil or article tray generally indicated at 43 is interposed and fixed between each tie bar 28 and the lower side of the box 29. The trays 43 converge forwardly and are of L-shaped configuration as shown in Figure 2. The lower side 44 of each tray is interposed between the bottom of the box 29 and an adjacent tie bar 28 and is welded to the box 29 and the tie bar 28.
The tray 43 includes a vertical outer side 45 which converges rearwardly and substantially contacts at its forward end with the adjacent side wall 31 of the box 29.
Referring now to Figures 11 to 14 inclusive, there is disclosed a modified form of this invention. The desk structure shown in Figures 11 to 14 inclusive includes a tubular frame structure which is identical in every detail with the frame 15. The frame 15a includes upper tie bars 28a on which a horizontally disposed top 46 is adapted to be secured by means of screws or fastening members 47. The screws or fastening members 47 extend upwardly through the tie bars 28a and into the top 46. The top 46 is non-adjustable and provides a firm surface on which the student may perform whatever work may be required.
In the use and operation of the desk structure shown in Figures 1 to 1Q inclusive, the book box 29 is adapted to receive thevarious articles such as books, papers or the like yvhich rnay be inserted into the box 29 by raising the top 35. Pencils or other elongated narrow articles may be placed in the laterally projecting trays 43 which have their larger, open ends extending forwardly and these articles will beheld against sliding rearwardly offofthe, traysby reason of the rearward converging position of thesideor vertical wall 45 ofeach tray.

3. A furniture frame comprising a horizontally disposed truncated V-shaped frame member, a pair of inverted L.-shaped legs having their upper inner ends extending from the divergent ends of said frame member, a second pair of inverted L-shaped legs having upper inner ends, means connecting one of said first pair of legs and one of said second pair of legs with each end of said V-shaped frame member, and a tie bar fixed between adjacent legs ofsaid pairs of legs at their upper ends.
4. A furniture frame comprising a base formed of a horizontally disposed truncated V-shaped frame member, a front pair of legs formed With arcuate upper ends extending from the divergent ends of said frame member, a rear pair of legs formed with arcuate upper end portions disposed at right angles to the divergent sides of said frame member, T-shaped connectors connecting the ends v of saidv front and rear legs to the divergent ends of said frame member, and a pair of horizontally disposed tie bars fixed one each between the arcuate upper ends ofv adjacent front and rear legs, the uppersidesof said tie' bars and the upper sides of said connectors being substantially coplanar.
