SHAFT-TUG.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 270,931, dated January 23, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that L JOHN B. BURRELL, of Fall River, in the county of Bristol, in the State f Massachusetts, have invented a new and usefullmprovement in Shaft-Tugs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a specification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.

My invention relates to that part of a harness which sustains the weight of the thills; and it consists of a suitable metallic ring of an ovoid shape, provided with pins and encircled by leatherstraps confined in place by said pins, and having an external metallic band, clampingthe whole together by means ot'a set'screw.

In the drawings, A represents the shalt-tug 2o proper, which is made of any suitable metal,

and furnishes the wearing-surface sustaining the weight of the shaft and the friction thereof. It is made preferably in an ovoid shape, as shown in Fig. 2, having the inner or exposed surface rounded and the outeror covered side a plane surface. At the upper or smaller end a transverse groove and central socket are formed to receive the buckle B and its buckletongue. The tugA has a series of spurs or points, a a,'and a series of pins, b b, which are cast in one piece with said tug. At the larger or lower end of the tug, and cast with it, is a stud, c, fitted with a screw-thread to receive the set-screw O. A box-loop, D, preferably of leather, is attached to the tug A by means of the spurs a enteringtherein, as shown in Fig.2. A lining-strap, E, preferably of leather, extends from the box-loop D, encircling the plane edge of the tug A, and held thereon by the pins b b, which pass through corresponding holes in said lining-strap. This strap passes between I the inner end of the buckle and the tug, and

is somewhat cut away for that purpose, and has a perforation for the buckle-tongue. This strap, however, simply serves as a lining, and may be omitted without essentially changing my invention. An external leather strap, F, extends from stud c and surrounds the liningstrap E, and is held in place by the pins 1) 0, received through corresponding holes. It is perforated through its central point to allow the insertion of the tongue of the buckle B. The strap F, passing inside the box-loop D, serves to hold it in snug contact with the tug A, andfor the purpose of still further stiffening said loop and to prevent its lateral displacement a rectangular piece, d, of sheet metal -(indicated in Fig. 2 by a heavy solid line) is inserted between the strap F and the inside surface of the loop D. A metallic band, G, of sheet metal, encircles the external strap F and at its free ends buttons on the stud c. It is also perforated at its central point for the insertion of the tongue ofthe buckle B. The

band G serves to give a finish to the article and to conceal the ends of the pins 1) I). A metallic strap-loop. H, covers and confines the free ends of the band G, and is fastened in position by the set-screw 0, thus holding all the parts firmly together.

I claim as a. new and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved shaft-tug herein described, consistingof the metallic tug A, having spurs a, pins 1), and stud 0, the buckle B, box-loop D, straps E F, band Gr, strap-loop H, screw 0, and stiffening-piece d, all combined and arranged substantially as specified.
