Description
M. PAYNE.
(No Model.)
SULKY SHAFT.
Patented Jan.16,188.3.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN PAYNE, 'OF TROY, NEW YORK.
SULKY-SHAFTS.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o."270,838, dated January 16, 1883.
Y Application filed October 2811882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN PAYNE, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Shafis; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which I Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved sulky frame and shafts, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the end of one of the shafts.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresp mding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to frames and shafts for sulkies; and it consists in the improved construction of parts of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A indicate the two shafts of a sulky. At their rear ends they are connected by a crosspiece, B.
\ O is the circle-bar, the ends of which are split in a longer piece, D, which is bolted to the shalt in front of the axle, and a shorter piece, E, which is bolted nearly over the axle.' Between the longer pieces, D, and the shafts are the stirrups F, bolted to the shafts and the pieces D. v
The circle-bar has at the middle and point-. ing rearward a tongue or projection, G, which tits into a groove, H, in a brace-bar, I, so as to prevent lateral play of the circle-bar.v
The brace-bar I is bolted at both end-s to the rear ends of the shafts, and bent to form. an arch having the groove H in its center, and the circle-bar and the brace-bar are, for further security, bolted together, holding the tongue G firmlyin place.
At their outer ends the shafts are provided with sleeves of leather, J, under which are strips of leather, K, wound around the shafts at intervals, forming ridges L, which prevent the tug-loops from sliding on the shafts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a sulky-frame, the circle-bar 0, split at both ends intoa long part, D, and a short part, E, bolted to the shafts in front of the axle, and provided with a tongue, Q, adapted to fit in o a groove, H, on the brace-bar I, substantially as set forth.
2. The shafts A, wrapped around at intervals with strips of leather, K, and provided with sleeves J, said strips forming ridges L on said sleeve, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The sulky having shafts A, provided with sleeves J, having ridges L, circle-bar'O, having tongue G and. split ends D E, adapted to be bolted to the shafts, and brace-bar I, having groove H, adapted to receive tongue G, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN PAYNE.
