SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,785, dated January 16, 1883,

Application filed September 21, 1882. (Model) To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM .E. GOOD- ENOUGH, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension Photograph-Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, part being broken away; and Fig. 3 is asectional plan view ofthesame, taken through the line w :r, Fig. 2.

The object of this invention is to provide frames for photographs and other pictures, constructed in such a manner that they can be adjusted to receive pictures of different sizes.

The invention consists in an extension-frame made with rabbeted side bars and a correspondingly-rabbeted top sliding upon the said side bars, kept in place by sliding keepers,and having its movements limited by a stop-bar attached to the said top and pins attached to the said side bars, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A represents the base or lower part ot' the frame, to which are rigidly attached the lower ends of the side bars, B. The side bars, B, are rabbeted upon their inner edges, and to their rear sides is attached the back (3, thus forming a pocket to receive the photograph, the lower edge of which rests upon a crosspiece, D, interposed between and attached to the base A and back 0.

E is the top part of the frame, which is rabbetcd upon the end parts of its rear side to receive the forward parts of the side bars, B, and slide up and down upon the said bars.

To the lower part of the rear side of the top E are attached small strips F, of sheet-brass or other suitable material, the outer ends of which enter the rabbets of the side bars, B, and press against the said side bars with suffrcient force to hold the said top E in any position into which it may be adjusted. The downward movement of the top E is limited by a bar, G, attached to,or a shoulder formed upon, the upper part of the back of the said top E, and which comes in contact with the upper ends of the side bars, 13. The upward movement of the top E is limited by pins H, attached to the inner corners of the upper ends of the side bars,B, and against which the slide strips or keepers F strike. The front of the top E should be made of a height a little greater than the space through which the said top will be moved in being adjusted, so that the upper ends of the side bars, B. will never be uncovered. With this construction the upper end of the picture-receiving pocket will always be open, so that the picture can be readily put in and taken out.

,The frame, when in use, is supported in an inclined position by a leg, I, which is hinged at its upper end to a block, J, attached to the back 0, so that it can be swung out into an inclined position to support the frame, and swung in against the back 0 for storage or transportation.

. Havingthus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In photograph-frames, the combination of rabbeted side bars having pins attached thereto, a correspondin gly-rabbeted sliding top carrying a stop-bar, and sliding keepers, where'- by pictures of varying size may be received, as described.

2. In an extension-frame, the combination, with the 'rabbeted side bars, B, and the rahbeted sliding top E,.of the sliding keepers F, the stop-bar G, and the stop-pins H, substantially as h rein shown and described,whereby the said sliding top is kept in place and its movements are limited, as set forth.
