UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFIC'E.
ALVA L. HOLLANDER, SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOX FOR MATCHES AND OTHER ARTICLES.
- SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 270,667, dated January 16, 1883.
' Applicationfi1edAngust5,1882. (NomodeL) To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALVA L. HOLLANDER, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Imopened. Fig. 3.is a section on line 0000, Fig. 1.
In Fig.4 the sliding part of the box is within the base, and in Fig. 5 a third arrangementof the parts is illustrated.
My box consists of a base, A,asliding part, B, and a cover, 0, so arranged together that the motion of the sliding part B relatively to base A in one direction will cause the cover to come into contact with some part of the base A, and thereby open the cover, while the contrary motion of the sliding partB will allow the cover to close. I have arranged these three parts in several other different ways than those shown in the drawings; but 011 the Whole prefer the arrangements shown as being the best forms now known to me of my invention. a
In Figs. 1 and 2 the base A is adapted to receive a spiral spring, D, which is fast to the bottom piece, 11. .This bottom piece, b, is supported by wings b, which are secured to the sliding piece B by means of the upper edges of two opposite wings, as shown in Fig. 3. The
edges of these wings, except where connected to the sliding piece B, are far enough away from the sliding piece to allow room for the base A to come between the wings and the sliding piece. The baseA is slotted at top so as to allow it to pass the parts of those wings which. serve to secure the wings to the piece B, and thereby allow the requisite movement of the sliding piece. The cover 0 is hinged at f to the sliding piece B, and when the piece B is forced down against spring D the projection f oncover 0 brings np'against the edgef of A, and the cover is thereby caused to move on its hinge f. The lips f serve to prevent-the cover 0 from openingtoo far.
In Fig. 4 the cover 0 is raised by the projection f coming in contact with the edge f of a strip of metal projecting'from and fast to A and through a slot in B.
In Fig. 5 a very simple and cheap form of my box is shown.
I am aware of a match-box resembling mine in having a cover and a sliding piece and base and a rubber spring; butin thatboxthe cover is hinged by a peculiar hinge to the base, while in mine the cover is hinged to the sliding piece, and the construction and mode of operation are also different in other material respects from mine. I prefer to use a spring, D, as that makes the box self-closing; but the sliding part may be moved in both directions by the hand, as in Fig. 5.
What I claim as my invention is The improved box above described, consisting of the base A, with a projecting edge, f the sliding piece B, the cover (3, with its projection f, hinged to the sliding piece, as set forth, and with or without the spring D.
