LABEL-HOLDER FOR CARS.
SEECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,283, dated. January 9, 1883.
Application filed August 18, 1882. (ModeL) 4 To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT S. OOULTER, of Swissvale,in the county of Allegheny and btate of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and use- 5 fill Improvement in Label-Holders for Cars Usedin the Shipment 0! Freight; and I hereby declare the'lollowing to be a lull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to Which my invention relates to make and use the same, relerence be ing had to'theacconi ianying drawings, form.- ing a part hereof, and in which- Figu e i represents my invention in perspective attached to a part of the side of a [5 car. Fig. 2 represents avertical sectional eleration through the spring 0.
For many purposes in railway freight busi- 'ness, cards upon which are the name of the consignee or destination of the goods loaded and such other facts as are material for those in railway ireight business are usually nailed against the side of the car,or pockets of various kinds employed for the same purpose; but there are various objections to those contriv- 2 ances, which I. endeavor to obviate by constructing an apparatus as-herein shown. It consists of a roof, a, preferably made ofinalleable iron or of stoutsheet met-aha part of which is bent upward so as to form a flange, '1), through e which screws or nails are passed, which fasten it permanently tothe side of thecar. 7 To the under side of the roof, at about its longitudinal center, and about from onequarter to half an inch out from the side 1, is riveted a flat spring, 0, provided with ahole.f, through the center of which is passed and secured to the side. 1 a pin, 0, with its outer end sharppointed, and below the hole the springis bent outward so as to form ahandle. g, and the said spring is so formed as to lie flat and press 40 against the side Z, from the handle 9 upward, about one-half or more of its lower lengih. To near the ends of the root to is also attacheda wire spring, d, of which the lower or horizontal part, h, passes over thespring 0, above and 5 on the outside ot' the handle 9, and so as to press upon the label It at both ends and its lower margin. Labels heldin this label-holder are fully protected from both rain and wind, are securely held, and easily read and removed 01' 5o replaced.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. Ina label-holderior cars, the combination, with the wall I, provided with pointed pin e, of the flanged roof (1 I) and spring 0, provided, with holef, substantially as specified.
2. In a label-holderforcars, thecomhination, with the wall I, provided with pointed pin 0, of the flanged roof a. 1), spring 0, provided with hole f. and spring d, constructed to operate substantially as specified. v
ROBERT S. OOULTER.
