Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1910.
Application filed Aug ust 16, 1909. Serial No. 513,108.:
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE PETERSON, citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to label or sign holders and more particularly to label or sign holders such as are used upon railway freight plurality of labels or signs, one for each of the dangerous materials that the car may be called upon to transport, and' this in such manner that the labels or signs may be readily interchanged or adjusted, so that the foremost label or sign will properly indicate the character of the material in the car.
Other advantageous features of the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part ofthis specification, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation showing my improvements as properly arranged upon a portion of the side of a car, and also showing by dotted lines the raised or open posi-v tion of the keeper member of the holder. Fig. 2 is a section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by arrow. Fig. 3 is a section, taken in the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by arrow.
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings, refer-ring to which:
A is the portion of a side of a freight car.
B, C and D are labels or tags, preferably made of sheet-metal in rectangular form, and having, by preference, wire appurtenances a at their upper corners through the medium of which they may be expeditiously and easily withdrawn from the body of the holder. E is the said body of the holder, and F is the keeper member thereof.
My invention contemplates providing the labels or signs B, G and D, with inscriptions such as Acid, Inflammable, and EX plosive, respectively, and this will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1, in which the foremost label or sign B is shown as bearing the inscription Acid.
As will be readily understood by comparison of Figs. 2 and 3, I prefer to form the holder body E of three bars, of Z-for1n in cross-section,and I also prefer to'so arrange the said bars that the lowermost portion ofthe body describes a right-angle, and the i -mouth b of the body is disposed above the I horizontal median line and at the right of the vertical median lineithereof, this arrangement being advantageous inasmuch as i it makes it convenient to insert and withi draw the labels or signs, and, at the same time lends stiffness and strength to the bottomor lowermost portion of the body, which 7 bottom or lowermost portion is formed by two Z-bars disposed at right angles to each other. I further prefer to relatively arrange the Z-bars comprised in the body E in the manner illustratedz'. 6., with the lower ends of the outermost portions of two of the Z-bars arranged under the outermost portion of the other Z-bar. With this done and the basexflanges'c of the several Z-bars fixedly connected to the side Aof a car, by bolts d or other-suitable means, a rigid and strong holder body is provided, and one which, by
reason of comprising the three Z-bars, is adapted to'be easily and cheaply produced.
The keeper member F is also preferably in the form' of a Z-bar, and the outer or forward portion of said bar is of a less length than the base flange 0 thereof, this in order to permitlof one end of the base flange being pivotally connected to the car at e, and the other end portion of saidebase flange being provided with an eye 7... In this connection I would say that I prefer to provide on one 1 of the base flanges of the body an eye 9, and that whenthe keeper member F is closed, a
wire. G may be passed through the eyes f I and g and secured by a seal I-I. Vvhenthis is done, the keeper member F will obviously be securely held in its closed position, and in said'position will preclude displacement of the labels or signs from and disarrangement played there "is no liability of any other label of the labels or signs in the holder body. i 7 Thus when, the car is loaded with acid, for, "instance, and the acid label or sign is dis-;
or sign being seen, and no liability of the displayedlabel or sign being accidentally removed or obliterated.
When it is not deemed expedient to secure the fastening member F in its closed position through the medium of a sealed wire, as shown and described, the member may be held closed through the medium of a gravitating hook I loosely connected to the side of the car and placed in the eye 7 of the keeper member.
The construction herein illustrated and described constitutes the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am cognizant, but I would have it understood that in the future practice of the invention such changes or modifications may be made as do not involve departure from the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
In a label or sign holder, the combination of an upright support, a body made up of three bars, of Z-form in cross-section, relatively arranged on the support to form a rectangle and disposed with the outermost portions of two opposite bars arranged at their lower ends under the outermost portion of the other bar; the said rectangular body being disposed with one of its corners lowermost and with its open side disposed above the lowermost of the said opposite bars, connecting devices extending through the base flanges of the said bars and fixing the same to the support, and a keeper member of Z- form in cross-section, having its base flange pivoted to the support near the uppermost portion of the body and also having an outermost portion adapted, when the member is in its closed position, to rest upon the outer sides of the outermost portions of the two opposed bars.
In testimony whereof I, have hereunto set I my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
