11 Claims. (Cl. 51-195) This invention relates to abrading implements, and particularly to semi-flexible laminated pads made up of interfolded strips of abrasive coated flexible material and attached to mandrels for use as polishing wheels and the An object of the invention is to enable such pads to be made more compactly and to more precise dimensions.
Another object of the invention is to make such pads more secure against unfolding and easy disintegration.
A further object of the invention is to present a new method of making pads of the kind described.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a new means for securing the pad in an integrated form, it being contemplated in this connection that such means shall serve also as a part of the means for rotating the Other objects and structural details of the invention will more clearly appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a pad and mandrel assembly, in accordance with the illustrated embodiment of the invention;

Referring to the drawing, an abrading implement in accordance with the illustrative embodiment of the invention comprises a pad 10 made up of multiple plies or folds of an abrasive coated fabric. Installed in and holding the pad in an integrated form is a hollow grommet 11, the opposing ends of which are substantially recessed in the material of the pad.
The interior of the grommet 11 is screw threaded and receives a complementarily threaded stud 12 on a mandrel 13. A relatively broad flange 14 at the base of the stud 12 provides a seat for the pad 10. The described threaded connection between the mandrel 13 and the grommet 11 makes possible a simplified pad replacement and also furnishes a driving connection from the power tool in which the mandrel is held to the pad. Thus, in the installing of a pad the mandrel 13 is caused to rotate and the stud 12 is inserted in the grommet 11. The pad 10 is held steady while the stud advances into the grommet, the relative rotation of the pad and mandrel continuing until the pad seats on the flange 14 whereupon the pad is in effect locked to the mandrel for rotation with it. In a removal operation, the pad 10 is held while the mandrel 13 is caused to rotate in a reverse direction, backing the stud 12 out of the grommet.
In forming the pad 10, use is made of a strip 15 of abrasive coated flexible material, and of a strip 16 of like material. The strip 15 may be transversely scored, as indicated by the broken lines 17, to define panels 18 for more accurate folding to the desired dimension. Thus the fold lines are spaced apart gradually increasing distances, with the panel 18 of shortest length at the left of the strip as seen in Fig. 3. In forming the pad, such 2,700,852 Patented Feb. 1, 1955 shortest panel is folded over upon the next adjacent panel and this double thickness is then folded over upon the third panel and so on until the strip is completely folded over upon itself, as seen in Fig. 5.
The strip 16 has a portion 19 equal in width to the strip 15 and approximately equal in length to twice the width of the folded strip 15, plus the thickness thereof. At one end of the portion 19 is a tongue 21, of reduced dimensions, its connection to the portion 19 being marked by a score line 22. The tongue 21 has a length approximately equal to the width of the strip 15 and a width approximately equal to the length of the shortest panel 18 of the strip 15. In further forming the pad 10, the tongue 21 of the strip 16 is inserted between the innermost folds of the strip 15, as indicated in Fig. 6, and then the portion 19 is extended in transverse enfolding relation to the strip 15 to produce the interlocking, multiply pad of Fig. 7.
Each of the panels 18 of strip 15, and the overlapping portions of the strip 16 are formed with an axial opening 23 which are aligned with one another in the assembled position of the strips. The grommet 11 is installed in the aligned openings 23, preventing withdrawal of the tongue 21 and clamping the several plies of the pad into substantially a one-piece, unitary pad which is somewhat flexible at its margins and presents a self-renewing abrasive surface to the work.
It will be understood that the strip 15 is selected in length and width in accordance with the desired dimensions of the finished pad, and that the strip 16, with its tongue 21 is made to complement the selected strip 15.
What is claimed is:
1. An abrading implement, comprising a first strip of abrasive coated flexible material folded upon itself to form a plurality of plies, a second strip of like material in enfolding relation to the first said strip and having on its one end a tongue received between the plies of said first strip, and means for holding said strips in assembled, folded condition to define a pad.
2. An abrading implement, comprising a first strip of abrasive coated flexible material folded upon itself in one direction to define a multi-ply pad closed at opposing ends and open at opposing sides, another strip of like material enfolding the first said strip from side to side thereof and having a tongue received between the plies of the first said strip, and means for holding said strips in relatively folded and enfolding relation.
3. An abrading implement according to claim 2, characterized in that said last named means has the form of a grommet internally threaded to serve as a part of the driving means for the implement.
4. An abrading implement, comprising a first strip of abrasive coated flexible material turned over upon itself in substantially equally dimensioned folds and a second strip of like material having a portion in enfolding relation to said first strip and another portion received between the folds of said first strip.
5. An abrading implement according to claim 4, characterized in that said other portion of said second strip is formed as a tongue of reduced width on one end of the strip.
6. An abrading implement, comprising, a strip of abrasive coated flexible material turned over upon itself in transverse folds to define a multiply pad of a width and length approximately the same as the width and length of one of said folds, and another strip of like material having one portion enfolding said pad in a manner to define upper and lower plies and having another portion received as a tongue between the plies of said pad.
7. An abrading implement according to claim 6, characterized by a grommet installed in and holding said tween the plies of said first strip whereby to form a pad, and interconnecting plies of said strips to form of said pad an integrated unit.
9. A method according to claim 8, characterized in that said last named step includes the installing in said pad of a hollow grommet internally threaded for rotary driving of the pad.
10. A method of making an abrading implement, including the steps of forming a first strip of abrasive coated flexible material, scorin" said strip along transverse lines spaced progressively increasing distances apart to define folds of progressively increasing length, folding said strip upon itself starting at the end of shortest fold length, forming a second strip of like material having a tongue of a size to be received in the inner folds of said first strip, and placing said second strip in enfolding relation to said first strip with said tongue inserted in the folds of said first strip.
11. An abrading implement, including an abrading pad formed of multiple plies of an abrasive coated flexible material, a hollow grommet installed in and holding said pad in assembled relation, said grommet having internal screw threads, and a mandrel having at one end thereof a stud in screw threaded connection with said ferrule and at the base of said stud a relatively broad flange providing a seat for said grommet.
