Application January 8,
11 Claims.
Third, to provide an expansible mandrel having these advantages which may be quickly and easily adjusted and locked in its adjusted positions.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure embodying the features of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary partially longitudinal section of an expansible mandrel embodying features of the invention, a roll of paper being indicated thereon.
Fig. 2' is a fragmentary transverse section on line 22 of Fig. 1, showing the clutch rollers in expanded position, adjusting tools or wrenches being shown in position for manipulating the mandrel.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view illustrating the "locking cams in locking position as distinguished from the position shown in Fig. 1 in which they are in their initial position.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view partially in longitudinal section on line 5-5 of Fig. 6 of a modified form or embodiment of my invention particularly desirable for larger diameter mandrels.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view partially in section and partially broken away on the line 6-6 of Fig. '7.
Fig. '7 is an enlarged fragmentary side view of the modification in Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 is a detail View mainly in section on line 88 of Fig. '7.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive comprises a shaft I having a plurality of peripheral cam surfaces 2 extending longitudinally thereof and adapted .to receive and actuate the clutch rollers 3. These clutch rollers are preferably knurled as shown in the drawings. The shaft is surrounded by the 1938, Serial No. 184,009
sleeve 4 having longitudinal slots 5 therein receiving the rollers 3. The cam surfaces 2 terminate in seats 6 at their inner ends of such depth that when the clutch rollers are engaged or rest in the seats their peripheries are substantially flush with the periphery of the sleeve 4 as is shown in Fig. 3. The cams are of substantial length so that the clutch rollers are gradually moved from the seats to clutching position as the shaft and sleeve are relatively rotated in mandrel expanding direction.
The sleeve is supported at one end by the thrust collar 1 pinned to the shaft at 8. At its opposite end the sleeve is provided with a helical cam surface 9 which is formed in the embodiment illustrated on the collar member 10 shouldered to receive the end of the sleeve and welded thereto as indicated at H, see Fig. 1.
The shaft is provided with a thrust collar I2 which is secured to the shaft by the pin [3 and between this thrust collar I2 and the cam member 10 is a clamping collar l4 having a cam surface l5 opposed to the cam surface 9 on the sleeve. The clamping collar l4, the thrust collar I2 and the cam member ID areeach provided 5' with a series of radial holes 16 adapted to selectively receive the pins IT on the tools or wrenches 18 which are provided with handles l9.
In the manipulation of the mandrel to expand the same the tools are first engaged with the 6 members l0 and 12, being positioned so that the sleeve and. shaft may be rotated relative to each other in direction to shift the clutch rollers to actuated position as shown in Fig. 2. The clutch rollers are shown in fully actuated position in this figure but it will be understood that they may be actuated to engage rolls or objects of different internal diameters. When securely engaged the clamping collar I4 is actuated to clamp the parts in their adjusted positions. the collar I4 is shown in its released position while in Fig. 4 it is shown adjusted to clamping position.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive is particularly desirable for the larger diameter mandrels. In-this embodiment, the sleeve 20 corresponding to the sleeve 4 of the embodiment described is mounted on the shaft l' in supporting engagement with the collar 1. This sleeve is provided with trans- 5O verse slots 2|, see Fig. 8, through which the pins 22 are disposed for securing the cam members 23 having cam surfaces 24 therein corresponding to the cam surfaces 2 of the embodiment shown in Fig. 3. These collars 23 are rotatably supported In Fig. 1 0
on the sleeve as shown in Fig. 8 and by this arrangement I secure the same cooperating relation between the sleeve and. the peripheral cam members on the shaft as in the embodiment described. The sleeve is provided with end flanges 25 and an intermediate flange 26 for supporting the clutch rollers 3. These clutch rollers are supported for radial movement relative to the sleeve and the shaft by means of the journal blocks 2'! which are supported in the radial slots 28 in the end flanges 25, pins 29 engaging the slots 30 retaining the journal blocks in the flanges. The rollers are positioned to coact with the cam surfaces on the collars as shown in Fig. 8 while the rollers are supported by the sleeves through its flanges 25 and 26. The flange 26 is provided with radial recesses 3 I, see Fig. 8. With this arrangement of parts, the relative rotative movement of the shaft and the sleeve actuates or retracts the clutch rollers the same as in the embodiment described. As stated, this embodiment is of special advantage in the larger diameter expanding mandrels. The same means are provided for clamping the parts in adjusted position.
The parts are capable of very easy and rapid manipulation both to expand the mandrel and to lock or secure it in its expanded or adjusted po sitions. Owing to the arrangement of the parts they may be very easily released.
I have illustrated and described my invention in an embodiment which I have found highly satisfactory. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain embodiments or adaptations which I contemplate as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
