Application February 24, 1953, Serial No. 338,223
2 Claims. (Cl. 2-105) This invention relates to a garment and more particularly to a garment adapted to be worn during sports events such as bowling and has for its primary object to protect the outer garments of the wearer from soil or injury.
Another object is to facilitate the rapid adjustment of the garment to the wearer and also to enable it to be readily removed when so desired.
A further object is to facilitate the laundering of the garment while preserving its neat fitting qualities when in use.
The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features a sheet of flexible material having a head receiving and neck encircling opening extending therethrough intermediate its ends, said sheet having concave recesses therein which open through opposite sides thereof between the opening and the opposite ends of the sheet to define with said opening front and back panels, extensions carried by the front panel and extending laterally therefrom adjacent the end thereof remote from the opening, separable fasteners carried by the extensions adjacent the ends thereof remote from the front panel for releasably connecting the extensions adjacent the back of the wearer, and extensions carried by the back panel and extending laterally therefrom adjacent the end thereof remote from the opening for extension across the abdomen of the wearer and said last-named extensions being adapted to be connected together in front of the abdomen of the wearer.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of the garment as it would appear preparatory to being placed on the person of the wearer,
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the garment as it would appear after having been placed on the person of the wearer,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view through the garment illustrated in Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing a modified form of neckline.
Referring to the drawings in detail this garment designated generally comprises a fiat sheet of flexible material 12 having formed intermediate its ends a head receiving and neck encircling opening 14 through which the head and neck of the wearer protrude when the garment is in place on his person. Opposite sides of the sheet are provided with concave recesses 16 and 18 and cooperate with the opening 14 in defining a front panel 20 and a back panel 22. In the preferred form of the invention opposite ends of the sheet 12 are provided with darts 24, and projecting laterally from opposite sides of the front panel 20 adjacent the end thereof remote from the opening 14 are extensions 26 and 28 carrying separable fasteners 30 by which the ends of the extensions 26 and 28 may be releasably connected together adjacent the back of the wearer. In certain instances, it may be desirable to provide a length 32 of elastic Webbing on the extension 28 and attach the adjacent separable fastener 30 to said webbing for the purpose of allowing the garment to expand and contract about the waist of the wearer. Carried by and extending outwardly from the back panel 22 adjacent the end thereof remote from the opening 14 are extensions 34 which when the extensions 26 and 28 together with the front panel are trunk-encircling relation, may be fastened together across the abdomen of the wearer in order to hold the back panel snugly against the back of the wearer.
In the preferred form of the invention, the extensions 34 are of suflicient length to enable them to be tied together in the form of a bow 36 as will be readily understood upon reference to Figure 2. Obviously as the front and back panels are placed on the trunk of the wearer with the head protruding through the opening 14, and the extensions placed in waist-encircling position about the trunk of the wearer, arm holes 38 will be defined below the opening 14 by the recesses 18.
In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figure 3, the garment designated generally 10' constructed as previously described is provided with an opening 40 in place of the opening 14 which has a neckline dilfering from the opening 14.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a garment, a flexible sheet comprising a front panel and a back panel, a head and neck receiving opening in said sheet between said front and back panels, said front panel having lateral extensions, means for securing said extensions together at the back of a wearer, said back panel having lateral extensions arranged to be tied together at the front of a wearer in front of the front panel.
2. In a garment, a flexible sheet comprising a front panel and a back panel, a head and neck receiving opening in said sheet between said front and back panels, said front panel having lateral extensions, means for securing said extensions together at the back of a wearer, said back panel having lateral extensions arranged to be tied together at the front of a wearer in front of the front panel, the front and back panels having side edges which are continuously concavely curved from locations in the region of the head and neck receiving opening to the extensions of the front and back panels.
