- the ring of rigid design for the pressure contact plates which must be of large dimensions, is frequently deformed after being in operation for a short period to such an extent that expensive repairs involving stoppages become necessary.
- an unvarying, uniform contact pressure cannot be achieved, and this is of particular disadvantage in the case of the relatively plastic electrodes.
- a rope which can be endless or coupled, is particularly suitable as a flexible ring and, in this case also, the tightening and loosening of the contact plates can be effected either directly as shown in Fig. 3 or indirectly as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
- the movement of the contact plates for obtaining a tightening or loosening effect is carried out by narrowing and widening the circumference and thus, although the original circumference remains practically the same, the shape of the ring is altered.
- the ring forms, as long as it is loose, a larger circle or polygon lying in a plane approximately vertical to the axis of the electrode. To press the contact plates onto the electrode the diameter of this circle must be decreased.
