CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of vLetters Patent No. 269,707, dated December 26, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOSEPH P. B. RAREY, of Kokomo, in thecounty of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which-will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is aperspoctive view of my improved car-coupling. Fig. 2 is a bottom view 1 of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation.

My invention has relation to automatic car- .20 couplings; and it consists in the improved construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

To one side or" the draw-head, on the platform. is a bearing, O, through which passes a rod, 1), which is bent at the upper end, and
0 reaches over to the coupling-pin, to which it is fastened. The lower end of rod D is slotted, as shown at D, and through the slot passes the bent end F of a rod, 1 the other end of which, F is bent at a right angle tolhe central part of it, and hung in beatings Or on the side of the car.
Under the bearings G is fastened an eye, H, through which slides a rod, I, having a handle on its outer end, and hinged at its inner end to a double crank, J, hung in bearings j j on the bottom of the car.- The outer end of the crank J is bent at a right angle to its straight part, and at an angle of about forty-five degrees to its doubled part or the crank proper,
turned a little upward in the outer end, as shown at K, and engages the bent portion F of the rod F, which slides on its upper side.
L is a bumper on one side of the-car, which is fastened on a slide, M, which slides in bear- 0 ings N N on the bottom of the car. This slide is doubled parallel to itself, forming a catch for rod F when it is raised. The slide is moved by a crank, O, actuated by a handle,

ferred to the slide by a pitman, Q. hinged to it. B is the link used. It is of heavy metal, and slightly bent, so as to point in an upward direction when it is placed in the draw-head.
When the coupling is to be used the pin is raised by drawing the rod I out to the side. This turns the crank outward, and arm K lifts the rod F, and consequently the bent rod D, which raises the pin. The slide is brought iorward to catch rod F by turning the handle P in the opposite direction. When the car to which it is desired to couple the one where the coupling has been put in order, as above described, comes in contact with the one to be coupled the link will enter the draw-head, be ing by its shape held a little upward, and the bumper L and slide M are pushed back and release rod F, which allows the pin to drop into place and catch in the link.
The bent end F of'the rod F may be provided with a ft'i0 i0ll-I0ll81,f", which rolls on the upper surface of the bent arm K. On the upper end of that part of rod D which slides in thebearings C is an elastic buffer, d, which lessens the jar when the couplingpin is dropped.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a car-coupling, the combination of the draw-head A, having the coupling-pin B, with the mechanism for operating the same, consisting of the bent rod D, slotted at its lower end, rock-shaft F, having bent end F inserted through the slotted end of rod D, sliding rod 1, and crank J, having'bent arm K engaging the bent end F of rock-shaft F, all constructed and combined to operate substantially as set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination of the mechanism consisting of the bent rod D, slot- 5 ted at its lower end, rock-shaft F, bent at its free end F, sliding rod I, crank J, having bent arm K, with thesliding bumper L M, pit man Q crauk O, and handle P, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and set forth.
