FRANK HEINZ, OF ATCHISON, KANSAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,513. dated Tune 7l 1887.
Application filed April 14, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, FRAN-ir HEINZ, a citi- Zen of Bohemia, residing at Atchison, in the county of Atchison and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CarCouplers; and l do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which 'form a part of this specifica` tion.
This invention relates to improvements in car-couplings; and it has for its object to facilitate the coupling and uncoupling of adjacent cars.
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is had and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of my device, showing the coupling pin in position when the caris coupled; and Fig. 2is alongitudinal sectional elevation of the same, showing the piu raised or in the position when the cars are uncoupled.
ln the drawings, the letter A indicates a car Y to the under side and forward end of which is 4o j usted by means of vertical spiral springs b 2 secured one or the inner end of a tilting or inclined frame-work, B, secured pivotally to the inclined side pieces, E E, constituting a part of the frame-work B at its outer or lower end, by means of a rod, b, the inner or free end previously referred to being regulated or adinterposed between the under side of the free end of the tilting frame-work B and a cross` piece, C, secured tothe side pieces, E E, in the center of which is a perforation, c, through which a pin, D, passes for the purpose of steadying and holding in place the springs b b2. Secured to the upper part of this crosspiece C, at each cud, is alat bowed spring, (not shown in the drawings,) which, in conjunction with the spiral springs b b2, serves to facilitate the adjustment of the free end of the frame- Serial No. 234,795. (No model.)
work relatively with the draw-head, or any suitable draw-head.
To each inner sideof the frame-work B is secured two ways, F F. Vithin t-hese ways slide two platforms, G G,having rollers gg secured to their under sides, which traverse the bottom of the frame-work to the platform G, traversing the whole distance of the length of the frame-work, while the platform G traverses but half of its length, an inclined perforation being made in the bottom of theframe-work at thepoiut where themeeting ends of the platforms GGform a junction. At this point also is made a stop by means of the upper part of the lower part or section of the bottom, by which means the platform G can descend no farther, but can ascend similarly to the platform G to form a junction at the mouth of the draw-head. Loosely pivoted in the upper end of the frame-workis a roller, H, and adjacent to said roller and secured within an inclined slot, h, is a triangular or nearly triangular piece of metal, I, having a fiat steel 'spring secured to the under side, which serves to give motion or sp1-ing7 to the free end of the metallic strip I. J is a coiled spring formed upon the center of a bent rod, j,A which has one end secured to the under side of one or thelower end of the platform G and the other end secured to the rod b, which is in turn secured to the outer or lower end of the side pieces, E E, of the frame-work,
Thefunctions of the roller H, metallic strip Land coiled spring QT serve t0 operate and elevate the platforms G', upon which the link rests upon the contacting car and assists in passing it into the draw-head, where it is coupled by the coupling-pin, which will be hereinafter referred to.
K is the draw-head, which may be of the ordinary or any preferred construction, provided with the usual mouth or opening and having perforations 7c k therein for the reception of a couplingpin, L, having an eye, Z, in the top, through which alink is passed and which also passes through an eye formed upon a projecting portion, Z', of the angular coupling-rod M. This coupling-rod M is provided with weights upon the ends of its rear projecting arms, N, and also secured at one end thereto -is another rod m, which connects with IOT) a weight, m', at the other end of'said rod and top of the car.
The coupling-pin L is surrounded by a coiled spring, Nand secured to the under side of the forward part of the ear is one end of another bent spring, O', which lies within the opening formed by the projecting portion of the horizontal angular coupling-rod. Secured to the draW-head,upon its upper surface and in rear of the coiled spring O, is a curved rod, I), which is linked at its free ond to the free end of the bent spring O'. Interposed between the rear end of the draw-head bar and a cross-piece, Q, is a spiral spring, R, whereby motion is given to the draw-head bar and relieves the force of the contacting ears.
The coupling and uneoupling of the Cars will be obvious when taken in connection with the foregoing description and accompanying drawings.
That I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Pateniyisl. The frame-work B E E, having the plat'- forms G G, rollers g g, ways F F, triangular plate I, and roller H, iu combination with springs b b, cross-piece C, and spring J, ar; ranged and operating as described. l
2. The combination, with the frame-work B E E andl its attachments, constructed as described, of draw-head K, angular rod M, bent spring O', coiled springN, oouplingpin L,and curved bar or rod P, all arranged and operating as herein described, and for the purpose set forth. l y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK HEINZ.
