SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,233, dated November 10, 1885.
Application filed July 23, 1885. Serial No. 172,459.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVALTER F. HALL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Clinton, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in car-couplings; and it consists in providing the draw-head with a forwardly-projecting arm, to which is pivotally attached the coupling-pin, and means for raising said pin, and in providing the drawhead with pivoted spring-actuated bar, which will hold the coupling-pin in an elevated position, which bar is automatically thrown out of engagement with the projecting arm when the link abuts against the same, as will be-hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
My invention also consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as shown and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improvement. Fig, 2 is a sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view.
A represents the draw-head, which is attached to the car in the usual manner, said draw-head having rigidly attached thereto an upwardly-projecting portion, A, which is provided with bearings for a forwardly-projecting arm, B. The arm B is pivotally con- (No model.)
car, and is for the purpose of elevating the coupling-pin D. The upper end of this rod passes through a bracket, e, as shown.
It will be readily seen by ihe construction hereinbefore described that the coupling-pin can be elevated from the top of the car, and that an excess of its upward movement will be prevented by the beveled end of said arm contacting with the upper edge of the recess 7).
The draw-head A, rear of the opening a, is provided with an opening, a, alongside the edges of which projects the portions 0 c of the block A. Between the projecting portions 0 c is pivoted an arm, F, the lower end of which projects into the opening in the drawhead, and the front edge of this depending portion is inclined slightly rearwardly. Above the pivot f, which secures the arm to the drawhead, is located a contractile spiral spring, 9, one end of which is secured to the lower portion of the recess 6, while its opposite end is secured to the arm F by means of a bolt,
As shown in Fig. 3, the spring at its inner end, may be provided with a hook, which will engage with a staple located within the recess 6, and the spring is bent at its ends, soas to embrace the heads of the bolt 9 and the head of the hook at the opposite end of the spring.
The upper portion of the arm F is bifurcated, so as to admit the arm B passing through the same, and the upper portion of each member f is notched, so that it may pass partly under the end of the rod E, and thus support the arm B in an upwardly-inclined position.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the rod E is raised from the top of the car, it will elevate the arm B and the couplingpin D, which are held in a raised position by the arm F, the upper end of which is drawn inwardly by the spring 9, so that the end of the rod will rest upon the upper edge of the same. Vhen the link is inserted inithe drawhead, it will contact with the lower portion of the arm F, which depends within the drawhead, and will throw its upper end outwardly and out of engagement with the rod E, thus allowing the pin D to fall, so as to couple the cars to each other.
It will be noticed that the arm F is automatically brought into engagement so as to support the coupling-pin, and is similarly released when the link enters the draw-head.
I claim 1. In a car-coupling, the pivoted arm B, having a pin attached to the outer end thereof, in combination with the pivoted supportingarm which is drawn rearwardly by a spring attached thereto and to a block abovethe draw-head, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a car-coupling, the draw-head A, having perforations a a and block A, with recesses b e, in combination with the arm B,
pivoted to the block, as shown, and having attached thereto the lifting-rod E, link 0, and pin D, the arm F, the lower portion of which extends within the draw-head, a retractingspring, and bifurcated end notched, as shown, for the purpose specified.
