UNITED STATES PATENT OEE-ICE.
GEORGE W. PRENTIGE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISL-AND.
BUTTON-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 269,705, dated December 26, 1882.
Application tiled September V20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beit known that l, GEORGE W. PREN'rtcE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Providence, in the count)` otl Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastenings; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it a-ppertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the letters and tigures ofreference marked tbereon, which' lorm a partof this specilic-ation.
My present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class ot'combined lacing-studs and button -i'asteners lor which Letters Patent ot' the United States were granted to me under dates ot' February l. and March 8, 1881, and numbered 237,126 and 238,523, respectively; and my improvements consist essentially ot'a button-head provided with a downwardly-depending prong or pin, having a retaning-plate connected therewith in such manner as to provide a neck portion bet-.veen the said button-head and the retaining-plate, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In `the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation ot' my complete device; Fig. 2, a vertical section thereof; Fig. 3, a sectional moditication 5 Fig. 4, a side elevation ot' the same as applied to a fabric, and Figs. 5 and 6 vertical sections of modifications.
Similarlettersot' referenceindicatelike parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the button-head, which may be formed of soleleather, pulp, or other suitable material, compressed around and upon the enlarged or spread head a of the metallic pin or tack B in such a manner as to firmly and securely connect the two parts together, as fully shownin the drawings.
The metallic pin or tack B is formed with an enlarged' or spread head, a, to secure the same to the button-head, as already described, and with retaining-plate b at a suitable distance below the` button-head, so as to provide an intermediate neck, c, as shown. 'lhis retaining-plate b may be either formed solid with the metallic pin B, as shown in Figs. l
and 2, or it may be made'separately, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6. The button-head A has also the connecting-pin B and may bejapanued and linished in any suitable color to complete the device. ln the operation ot' setting the same the button is alijxed in one jaw of a suitable setting-instrument or power-machine, and the fabric or material to which the button is to. be attached is inserted between t-hejaws, which, being closed together, forces the point ot' the pin or tack B through the material, and by a suitable die in the opposite jaw ot' the instrument is curved or deected back again into the material or under side of a retaining-plate to securely connect the button thereto, the plate b resting upon the surface ot' the labric, as `fully shown iu Fig. 4.
Havingtlius described my invention, what I claim as new and'uset'ul is- As an improved article ot' manufacture, the
herein-described button and fastening, consisting ofthe solid head A, which is compressed around or upon the enlarged or spread head ofthe metallic pin B, which is provided with a central plate or shoulder, b, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
