SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,540, dated December 26, 1882, Application filed May 18, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom'it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER A. RENO, ofDetroit city, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in RivetingdVI-achines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in the combination of devices and appliances hereinafter specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention, showing parts in section. Fig. 2 is an end view of a portion of the same.
The object of my invention isto provide a riveting-machine adapted for various kinds of work, among which it is especially adapted for use where castings or sheet metals are employed, as in the manufacture of stoves.
it has been customary heretofore to rivet different parts by hand with a hammer. -By this method, however, the castings are frequently broken. My invention is designed to correct this difficulty, and especially to rivet o sheet metal to cast-iron doors or other parts, and is equally adapted to riveting sheet metals and cast-iron plates.
'lhe letter A denotes a suitable frame or table, and E and E are the jaws of rivetingclamp, the stationary jaw -E being fixed to the upper surface of the table-top, and projecting outwardly beyond the edge thereof, and the movable jaw E is pivoted under the table-top, and projects sufliciently for its work- 0 ing-face to meet that of the stationary jaw.
1). is a loop or stirrup suspended upon the stationary jaw, and having its arms depending on opposite sides thereof, the lower ends of said arms being provided with bearings for the fulcrum-pins c of a lever, O, the short arm 0 of which is bent upward and terminates in the rounded tip 0, which fits into a corre-. sponding recess, 6, in the under side of the movablejaw E.
F is a spring arranged upon the top of the table, and connected with the long arm of lever O by a rod, F, passing through an aperture in the-tahle-top, and B is a treadlelever pivoted under the table, and connected with the long arm of the lever by a link, b.
Thejaws E and E are respectively provided with steel upsetting-dies c and 6''.
The parts connected and having rivets inserted are placed between the dies with the rivets in proper position, and when the treadle is forced downward by the foot the lever O forces the lower jaw upward, bringing the dies toward each dther with great force and upsetting heads upon the rivets. The lever G and stirrup or loop D have an action similar to 6 that of a toggle-joint supplemented by the long arm of the lever. An adjusting-screw, d, passing through the cross-arm of the stirrup or loop, and having its tip resting upon the top of the upper stationary jaw, serves to regulate the throw of the movablejaw.
I have described this device more particularly as adapted to a riveting-machine. It is equally well adapted for a punching or shearing machine; and I would have it understood that my invention contemplates its application especially to riveting, punching, and shearing, and also for other similar purposes.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to have patented, is-
1. The combination, with the frame A, of the stationary and movable clamping-jaws, provided with suitable dies, the stirrup or loop suspended upon the stationary jaw, the lever O, fulcrumed in the depending arms of said stirrup or loop, and having its short arm arranged to bear against the under side of the movable jaw, and the treadle connected with the long arm of said lever, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the stationary and movable jaws, the latter having a recess, 6, formed in its under side, of the stirrup orloop D, provided with the adj usting-screw, bearing upon the stationaryjaw, and the leVer'U, fulv crumed in the depending arms of said stirrup, and having its short arm provided with the tip 0, engaging in the recess in said movabl'jaw, substantially as described.
