UNITED srilrnsigrnnr orrrca EDMUND WALTER THURGAR, OF HYDE PARK, LONDON, ENGLAND.
IMPLEMENT FOR PUNCHING, PERFORATING, 0R STAMPING.
Application filed November 30, 1908.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND WALTER Tirunsiin, a subjectof the King of Great Britain, residing at Hyde Park, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Implements for Punching, Perforating, or Stamping, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools or implements for removing pivot pins or rivets; and its prime object is to provide a simple and inexpensive implement, especially useful to jewelers, by means of which pivot-pins or rivets may be readily and quickly removed from articles of jewelry and fine and delicate mechanisms.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the implement may be employed as a perforator, to perforate or eye telegram blanks, or forms, and other papers.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially of a pair of jaws, pivoted together, provided with an interchangeable tool carrying plunger, operative in suitable guides, and with means for regulating or varying the movement of said plunger, each jaw being provided with a suitable handle.
The invention also consists of the novel arrangement and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully described in this specification and briefly stated in the Y claims.
In the drawing-Figure 1. is a side View of my improved tool or implement, and Fig. 2 a vertical section through the forward ends of the jaws.
In the several views, the numeral 1 indicates the upper and 2 the lower of a pair of jaws, pivoted together and provided with suitable handles. The upper jaw, or jaw 1, is of angular shape, and is provided at its forward end with a lip or projection 3, to which is attached a bifurcated guide-plate l. The lower jaw, or jaw 2, corresponds in shape to the upper jaw, but is much shorter, and its forward end is provided with an aperture 5 through which a tool-carrying plunger 6 is adapted to operate, and be guided in its movements thereby. The toolcarrying plunger is provided with a concave or socketed-head 7 and is operatively confined between the prongs of the bifurcated guide-plate 4. Seated in the socketed-head Specicaton of Letters Patent.

is a ball 8 which is adapted to bear against the under face 9 of the upper jaw to provide an approximately frictionless bearing. The face 9 is slightly curved, and said face, toget-her with the guide-plate, which is correspondingly curved, forms a run or guideway l() for the ball and socketed head of the tool carrying plunger. The lower jaw is provided with a work-support or anvil 11, having in its outer end a vertical aperture or passage 12, through which the pin or rivet passes, as it is being forcibly removed by the forced action of the tool carrying plunger. The lower end of the tool-carrying plunger is provided with a tenon 13, to which may be fitted various punching or perforating tool-points 111. Any well known means for removably attaching the tool-points to the tool-carrying plunger may be employed, in providing for the use of interchangeable tools.
In order that the tool-point, whether it be a punch or a perforator, may not have to exceed the distance itis required to travel or move, I provide a distance regulator consisting of an adjustable screw 15, on the upper aw, and a stop 16, on the lower jaw. It will be obvious that by adjusting the screw, with reference to the stop, the travel or movement of the tool-carrying plunger may be regulated to any required distance. I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to any particular form of regulating` device, as various devices may be devised for regulating the distance of travel of movement of the tool-carrying plunger.
An implement or tool constructed in accordance with my invention is especially useful to manufacturing and repairing jewelers, as pivot pins or rivets may be quickly and easily removed from various articles of jewelry, by holding the article upon the anvil or support, with the pin or rivet directly over the aperture or passage 12, and forcing the jaws toward each other, until the end of the regulating-screw, which has been previously adjusted, contacts with the stop 16, when the pin or rivet will have been forced out of its place or seat and through the aperture or passage 12. In the operation of removing the pin or rivet, it will be noted that the upper jaw, which is much longer and projects over the lower jaw, is caused, by the forced approach of the jaws, to ride over the ball bearing head of the tool carrying plunger and force the plunger through the guide-aperture 5 iii a perfectly true line, said plunge-r being guided in its movement by said aperture. y
Various modifications or vchanges in' the details of construction of my improved implement or tool, may be made wit-hout departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing the principle thereof.
AHaving thus fully described my invention what I claim, is
l. A tool or implement for punching, cutting, etc., comprising a pair of pivoted jaws, one of said jaws being provi-ded with' a guide-way, a plunger, operative in said guide-way, and provided with a ball-bearing head engaged by one of the jaws to operate the same. v
2. In a tool or implement for punching, cutting, etc., the combination with a pair of pivoted jaws, of a reciprocatory plunger, having its upper portion loosely confined in a Y'uide-plate attached to the upper jaw, anc its lower portion operative in a guideway in the lower jaw. j j
'8. In a toolor implement for punching, cutting, etc., the combination with a pair of pivoted jaws, of a reciprocatory plunger, havin-g its upper portion loosely confined' in a guide-plate attached to the upper jaw, and its'lower portion operative in a guideway in the lower jaw, and means for controlling' the distance of travel of the plunger.
4., A tool or implement for punching, cutting, etc., comprising a pair of pivoted jaws, the upper .jaw being provided with a horizontal guide-way and the lower .jaw with a vertical guide-way, and a plunger operative in the guideavays and operated bythe upper jaw.
5. A, tool or implement for punching, cutting, etc., comprising a pair of pivoted jaws, each jaw being provided with a guideway, a reciprocatory plunger operative in -said guideeway's, and means for controlling the distance of travel of said plunger.
'6. In 'a tool or implement for punching, cutting, etc., the combination with a pair of pivoted jaws, one ot' said jaws being provided with` a bearing-surface and the other with a guide-way, of a plunger operative in said guide-way, and provided with a ballbearing head in operative Contact with the bearing surface of the jaw, whereby an approximately frictio'nles's bearing is provided.
7.4 In -a tool or implement 'for punching, cutting, etc., Ythe combination with a pair of pivoted jaws, one of said being provided with a bearing-surface and the other with guidevvay, ot' plunge", operative in said guide-way, and provided 'with 'a ball bearing head, and means for controlling the distance of travel of said plunger.
8. In a toolor implement for punching', cutting, etc., vthe combination with a pair of pivoted jaws, one of said jaws being provided 'with a bearinglsurtace and the other with a guide way and a Vwork-support, 'of a plunger operative in said guide-'way and provided with a ball bearingphead.
9. In fa tool or implement vfor punching, cutting, etc., the combination with 4a pair of pivoted jaws, one ot' said jaws being provided with a bearing-surface and4 the other vjaw with a guide-way and a work-support,
of a plunoer, operative in said Vguide-way and provided with a ball-bearing head, and means for controlling the distance of travel ofthe plunger. Y i l I-n testimony whereof I ailiii my signature in presence of two witnesses.
