Qlaims priority, application Luxembourg March 13, 1951 4 Claims. (Cl. 214-519) The present invention relates broadly to the art of material handling. More particularly this invention relates to material, compression and loading means for truck bodies.
This invention therefore constitutes an improvement in the compression loading means disclosed by me in my co-pending application Serial No. 114,497, filed September 8, 1949, and now patented under No. 2,622,748, dated December 23, 1952.
Therefore the present invention has for an object to provide a unique and novel double piston arrangement for loading refuse into a refuse container including a ramming piston and a supplementary piston that constitutes a combined refuse material introduction tube closure and refuse material moving means.
Thus this invention consists of using a piston of a special form actuated by a hydraulic or mechanical member in order to retain the refuse pressed into the collecting container by a ramming piston.
During the first phase of the charging of the refuse, this special piston can be used as a rigid plate in order to constitute a backing plate against which refuse will be compressed upon the movement ,of the ramming piston toward the special piston.
At a certain moment the special piston is lifted by the hydraulic or mechanical member allowing thereby, the compressed refuse to pass into the collecting container.
One form of construction of the arrangement according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. 7
Fig. 1 represents the invention in the initial position of the ramming piston and in the final position of the special piston.
Fig. 2 represents the initial position of the special piston and the final position of the ramming piston.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross sectional view illustrating in full and dotted lines the respective positions of both pistons.
Consistent with the disclosure embodied in my above mentioned prior patent the present fragmentary drawings disclose that the collecting chamber 1 includes a rear closure or back door 2 which carries the loading opening 3, a loading chamber 4 and a ramming piston 5 actuated by a. hydraulic member 6. The special piston 7 is actuated by a hydraulic member 8 and slides in the guides 9 in order to close or to open the introduction tube 10.
The device operates in the following manner. Through the loading opening 3 the refuse is poured into the introduction tube in advance of the ramming piston 5. The ramming piston new advances and presses the refuse against the front wall of piston 7. The refuse is thus compressed and, while the ramming piston is still moving, the special piston 7 is lifted by means of a hydraulic member 8 so that the compressed refuse may pass into the collecting receptacle 1 through the opening 1 of the introduction tube.
When the forward stroke of the ramming piston is completed, the refuse is in the collecting container and the special piston 7 actuated by the hydraulic member 8 again closes the opening 10 thus preventing the refuse from falling back into the introduction tube.
Upon the return or retraction of the ramming piston S to its initial position, the same cycle of charging and compressing refuse is repeated until the charge or load within the collecting receptacle is deemed to be suificient.
2,695,110 Patented Nov. 23, 1954 It is therefore clear that the present invention provides means constituting a compression loader for a refuse container. The container 1 has an opening the rear wall thereof which communicates with an introduction tube 11) that includes a bottom wall 10a extending downwardly and outwardly with respect to the container.
A ramming piston 5 is mounted in the introduction tube for movement toward and away from the container. This piston is extended and retracted by hydraulic means including the cylinder 6 and the ramming piston 5 is mounted at the remote end of the introduction tube with reference to the container.
The load chamber 4 and inlet 3 which together constitute means defining a refuse material inlet communicate with the introduction tube 10 in advance of the front face 5a of the ramming piston when the latter is retracted.
The ramming piston further includes a side wall 5b of such length that in its extended position, Figures 2 and 3, this side wall closes the inlet.
The invention further provides a combined introduction tube closing and refuse material moving piston 7 that is mounted between the refuse material inlet and the container.
The piston 7 moves transversely of the axis of the introduction tube and fluid means including the hydraulic cylinder 8 are provided for extending and retracting the piston 7. This piston 7 has a first face 11 remote from the container which is movable in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the introduction tube and a second face 12 adjacent the container disposed at an angle with respect tothe first face 11 such that the face 12 is ver- 1*; dis osed upri ht. The iston 7 has a stroke 0 movement imparted thereto such that in its retracted position, Figures 2 and 3, it does not obstruct the introduction tube but in its extended position, Figure 1, both faces of the piston completely close the introduction tube and the inlet to the container.
It thereby follows that with the piston 7 in the position shown in Figure 1 refuse material introduced through opening or inlet 3 into the introduction tube is compressed upon the extension of the ramming piston 5. The refuse being compressed between the first mentioned face 11 of he second piston 7 and the face 5a of the ramming piston 5.
Upon retraction of the second piston 7, the ramming piston 5 moves the compressed refuse material, as is clear from Figure 2, so that the refuse material is within the downward sphere of movement of the second face 12 of the second piston 7 and which second or angularly disposed face moves the refuse material into the container and simultaneously prevents refuse from falling backward into the introduction tube.
I claim:
1. Means for loading and compressing household refuse and like materials into a container comprising an introduction tube leading to the container, a ramming piston reciprocable in the introduction tube and movable toward the container in a loading and compressing operation, means defining a refuse material inlet communicating with the introduction tube in advance of the piston when the latter is in its retracted position, power means for reciprocating the piston between extended and retracted positions, a movable combined closure forming and refuse material moving piston for closing the introduction tube, said second piston being located between the container and the refuse material inlet, and power means for reciprocating said last mentioned piston in a direction transverse of the axis of the introduction tube between a retracted position out of the line of movement of the first mentioned piston and an extended position completely closing the communication between the container and the introduction tube.
2. Means for loading and compressing household refuse or the like materials into a container as claimed in claim 1, and in which said second mentioned piston includes a rigid wall against which in extended position refuse material is compressed upon the extension of the first mentioned piston.
3. Means for loading and compressing household refuse or the like materials into a container as claimed in claim 1, in which the introduction tube extends downwardly and outwardly with respect to the container, said first mentioned piston moving axially of the introduction tube, and said second mentioned piston including a first face constituting a rigid wall movable in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the introduction tube and a second face adjacent the container inclined toward the first face at an angle such that when said second mentioned piston is extended said second face in its extending movement rams refuse material into the container and in fully extended position of said second mentioned piston the said second face also completely closes said introduction tube.
4. In a compression loader for a refuse container having an inlet, means defining an introduction tube extending downwardly and outwardly with respect to the container inlet and communicating therewith, a ramming piston mounted in the introduction tube for movement toward and away from the container, power means for extending and retracting said ramming piston, said ramming piston being mounted at the remote end of the introduction tube with reference to the container, means defining a refuse material inlet communicating with the introduction tube in advance of the ramming piston when the latter is retracted, said ramming piston including a side wall of such length that in its extended position said side wall closes said inlet, and a combined introduction tube closing and refuse material moving piston mounted between said inlet and said container for movement transversely of the axis of said introduction tube, said second piston having a first face remote from the container lying in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the introduction tube and a second face adjacent the container disposed at an angle with respect to the first face such that said second face is vertically disposed,
power means for extending and retracting said second piston and imparting a stroke of movement thereto such that in retracted position said second piston does not obstruct said introduction tube and in extended position said second piston completely closes said introduction tube and the container inlet by both said faces whereby with said second piston extended and refuse material introduced into said inlet the extension of said first piston compresses the refuse material against said first face whereupon retraction of said second piston permits said first piston to move compressed refuse material within the sphere of movement of said second face of said second piston so that upon re-extension of said second piston the second face thereof moves refuse material into the container and completely closes communication between the container and the introduction tube due to the angular relationship of said second face.
