SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,404, dated January 5, 1897.

To all whom zltmay concern Be it known that I, NAPOLEON DU BRUL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Packers Presses and Bundling-Frames Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement-s on the cigar-paokers press forming the subjectmatter of Letters Patent No. 224,208, issued February 3, 1890, to Frederick C. Miller, of Newport, Kentucky, in which a frame or casting is employed which is formed with a base which supports a standard provided with a housing projecting over the base and having mounted therein a vertically-tubular non-rotating sliding nut, connected with a leveroperating mechanism, and in which works a screw-stem carrying a top presserhead or platen for pressinga bundle of cigars.
My invention also relates to improvements on the cigar-packers press and bundlingframe therefor forming the subject-matter of Letters Patent No. 529,254, issued November 13, 1894, to Edgar J. Fink, of Hanover, Pennsylvania, in which is employed side presserheads as well as a top presser-head, all connected with the lever mechanism which operates the top presser-head.
The object of my invention is to simplify the construction of the side pressing devices and bundling-frame and the means whereby the side pressing devices are connected with the lever-operating mechanism.
My improvement consists in novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed whereby the said object is attained.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a perspective view of my improved cigar-packers press and bundlingframe therefor. Fig. II is a perspective View of the bell-crank lever by which the upper rock-shaft is connected with the operating link or bar which is connected with the lower rock-shaft. Fig. III is a front view of the machine, showing parts in section. Fig. IV is a top view thereof. Fig.- V is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line V V, Fig. III. Fig. VI is a vertical transverse section on the line VI VI, Fig. III. Fig. VII is a detail top view of the lower rock-shaft, showing the right and left cam-slot blocks. The main frame of the press is a hollow casting or column formed with a base 1. with a standard 2 sin-mounting the base and with a boxing 3 located at the top of the standard and overhanging the base, the frame simulating in shape an inverted T as viewed from the front of the machine. The base 1 is formed with bearings at fora lower rock-shaft 5, which extends lengthwise of the base, and with surmounting hollow bearing-boxes 4* at the ends of the base. 7
6 are hollow segmental blocks formed with right and left cam slots 6, respectively, mounted on the lower rock-shaft and secured rigidly thereto by cross-pins 7, so as to oscillate with the rock-shaft within the bearing-boxes. Mounted on the middle portion of the rockshaft 5 and secured by means of a pin 8 is a crank-arm 9, project-ing toward the rear of the base. J ournaled at one side of the boxing3 is an upper rock-shaft 10, having a crankarm 11 located on the inner side of the boxing, and a lever-arm 12, providing an operating-handle located on the outer side of the boxing.
1 3 is a pendent bell-crank lever supported by its heel l3 on the crank-pin ll of the crank-arm ll. The short arm 13 of the bellcrank lever is coupled by a pivot-pin 14 with the upper end of a pendent link or bar 15, which is connected by means of a crank-pin 16 with the crank-arm on the lower rock-shaft. Thus when the upper rock-shaft is oscillated a similar movement will be imparted to the lower rock-shaft. Extending vertically through the boxing 3 is a tubular non-rotating sliding nut 17, having check-plates l7 at its lower end carrying a pivot-pin l8, connecting the lower end of the sliding nut with the lowerend of the long arm 13of the bell-crank lever.
Thus when the lever-arm is operated I the sliding nut is reciprocated. Mounted in the slidingnut 17 is an adjustable screw'stem 19, carrying at its lower end a top presserhead or platen 20, secured thereto byastaple 20 or any other suitable means. The upper end of the screw-stem is provided with an op crating-handle 21.
22 is a set-screw located on the opposite side of the sliding nut to the eheck-plates l7 and working through a threaded boss 17' for binding the screw-stem to the sliding nut when the former is adjusted in the latter for regulating the distance between the top presserhead and the base of the press in which the presser head is permitted to travel. The bearing-boxes 4 each support a horizontal tubular non-rotating sliding nut 23, which is formed with an upper internally-screwthreaded boss 23 and with a lower internallyscrew-threaded square boss 23". The square bosses guide the nuts in their movements in the bearing-boxes 4. The bearing-boxes are each formed with a longitudinal slot 4 in which the lower boss of the sliding nut moves back and forth, while the cap-plates 4 of the bearing-boxes are each formed with a longitudinal slot l, in which the upper boss of the sliding nut moves back and forth.
Mounted in each horizontal nut is an adjustable screw-stem 21L, carrying at its inner end a side presser-head 25, secured thereto by a staple 25 or any other suitable means, and at its outer end an operating-handle 20'. The horizontal nuts are reciproeated by means of the segment-blocks, the nuts being connected therewith by the means 110w described.
27 is a pendent arbor formed with a screwthreadcd inner end 27*, by which it is secured to the lower boss, with an angular collar 27", by which it is inserted in the boss, and with a spindle 27, providing an axle on which is mounted an antifriction-roller 28, supported by a washer 29 and a cross pin or key 30 and working in its cam-slot when the lower rockshat't is oscillated.
31 are set-screws having face-blocks 31 and adjustable in the upper bosses and binding on their respective screw-stems 24c when the latter have been adjusted to the proper distance from the sides of the bundling-frame.
My bundling-frame is applied and constructed as follows:
a0 is a longitudinally-divided bottom plate formed on its under side with a transverse channel a0, by which it is fitted over a transverse rib i formed on the base, and on its upper side with parallel dovetail grooves 4-0 one groove being located in each section.
41 is a handle for manipulating the outer section of the plate in separating the frame. Mounted on this bottom plate are vertical sectional side blocks 42, formed with dovetail tongues 42, by which they are fitted to the dovetail grooves of the bottom plate and are adapted to slide freely back and forth thereon. Secured to these side blocks 5L2 by screwbolts 43 are inner horizontal sectional blocks let, havinginterlocking finger-s44. The front horizontal blocks 44 are secured in any desired position by thumb-screws 45, working in the front wall of the bottom plate and binding 011 the dovetail tongues 41t thereof. Surmounting the horizontal blocks are two plates 4G,preferably of steel and adapted to ride one over the other and cover the joint between the meeting ends of the fingers.
47 are sectional side plates having guidecleats 48 secured thereto and adapted to slide between the side and horizontal blocks with their cleats fitting in channels formed in the side blocks and providing guides for the sliding plates. To adapt the bundling-frame to press an octagon bundle of cigars, I provide removable lower corner-blocks 49 and upper corner-blocks 50. The lower cornerblocks are connected with the horizontal blocks by means of dowel-pins 51, passing through the cover-plates, and the upper cor- 'ner-blocks are connected to the upper ends of the sliding plates by dovetail joints 50. Screw-bolts 52 extend across the space between the side blocks and horizontal blocks forseeurin g them together, and are surrounded by distancesleeves 53, which a re straddled by the side plates and the cleats on the side plates, which have Vertical recesses 48 for this purpose. The side presser-headsare recessed at 25" and 25, respectively, for the vertical blocks and vertical cleats.
It will be understood that all the screw stems work in sliding nuts in a similar manner to the sliding nut and screw-stcm shown in the Miller patent referred to. Instead of the operating-lever acting directly upon the horizontal nuts, the latter are provided with rollers which run in cam-slots of segmental blocks which are connected to a rock-shaft underneath the machine. The lever arm or handle fastened to the upper rock-shaft when pulled down brings down the vertical nut with the top presser-head, and at the same time it brings down the connecting link or bar and rotates the lower rock-shaft on which the segmental blocks are fastened and operates the two horizontal nuts simultaneously toward each other to cause the side pressure-heads to operate, as will be readily understood.
The bundling frame receives the cigars when in extended position, and after the eigars have been placed therein is put into the pross,where the three screw-stems are supposed to have been already adjusted to the pressure required to be given to the cigars, and the lever arm brought down, which presses'the bundling-frame on each side as well as on the top simultaneously.
It will be seen that the side plates of the bundling-frame are upheld by friction and are pressed down into the space left between the side and horizontal blocks and are guided by the distance-sleeves, which are straddled by the bifurcated cleats. The four corners of the bundling-frame being made removable,
square bundles, as Well as octagon bundles, can be pressed in the bundling-frame. The bundling-frame is made in large and small sections, so that the small section can remain on the back part of the press in an extended condition, while the cigars are placed in the larger sections. After a larger section has received the proper number of' cigars the front section is pushed against the rear section and the press is brought into action. While under the proper pressure the front thumb-screws are turned to tighten the front section to its pressed position. Then the lever-arm is raised, which relieves the pressure from the rear section, as well as the front section, of the bundling-frame; but the front section having been kept to its pressed condition by means of the thumb-screws retains,
the cigars in their pressed condition. The front section is then pulled away from the rear section and leaves the ends of the bundled cigars projecting to allow a band of paper which may have been stuck together to form a ring of the proper size to be slipped on the end of the bundle of cigars. Aribbon may also be used on the exposed end of the bundle of cigars, to be tied as may be desired, so as to retain the cigars in their pressed condition. Of course it will be understood that the cigars are left under pressure for a certain length of time until they are set. By mounting the side plates so as to slide vertically I avoid the necessity of employing extensible sections in connection therewith, as required by the'construction shown in the Fink patent referred to.
Having thus fully described myinvention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A cigar-packers press comprising a tubular non-rotating vertically-slidin g nut having a stem provided with a top presser-head, the tubular non-rotating horizontally-sliding nuts each having a stem provided with a side presser-head, the base having surmounting stationary bearing-boxes on which the horizontally-sliding nuts reciprocate, and mechanism whereby all the nuts are slid bodily simultaneously; substantially as described.
2. A cigar-packers press comprising a tubular non-rotating vertically-sliding nut having a screw-threaded stem provided with a top presser-head, and means for adjusting the stem, the tubular non-rotating horizontallysliding nuts, each having a screw-threaded stem provided with a side presser-head and means for adjusting the stem, the base having surmounting stationary bearing-boxes on which the horizontally-sliding nuts reciprocate, and mechanism whereby all the nuts are slid bodily simultaneously; substantially as described.
3. Acigar-packers press comprising vertically and horizontally sliding nuts provided with presser-heads, the horizontal rock-shaft having a crank-arm, the cam-blocks mounted on the rock-shaft and connected with the horizontally-sliding nuts and mechanism connected with the crank-arm and with the vertically-sliding nut whereby all the nuts are operated simultaneously, substantially as described.
4. A cigar-packers press comprising a vertically-slidin g n ut provided with a top presserhead, an upper rock-shaft having a crankarm and a lever-arm, a bell-crank lever connecting the crank-arm of the upper rockshaft to the vertically-sliding nut, the lower rock-shaft having a crank-arm, the pendent link connecting the bell-crank lever to the crank-arm of the lower rock-shaft, the blocks mounted on the lower shaft having right and left cam-slots, the horizontally-sliding nuts provided with side presser-heads, and pendent arbors secured to the horizontally-sliding nuts and working in the cam-slots of the blocks; substantially as described.
5. A cigar packers press comprising a frame having a base formed with surmounting stationary bearing-boxes a standard, and an upper bearing-box located at the top of the standard and overhanging the base, the tubular vertically-sliding nut having a stem provided with a top presser-head and located in the upper bearing-box and the tubular horizontally-sliding nuts each having a stem provided with a side presser-head, and located on the lower bearing-boxes, and means whereby all the nuts are reciprocated simultaneously; substantially as described.
6. A cigar packers press comprising a frame having a base formed with bearingboXes and a standard formed with an upper bearing-box, the vertically-sliding nut provided with a top-presser-head and extending through the upper bearing the bell-crank lever connected to the vertically-sliding nut, the upper rock-shaft connected to the bellcrank lever, the pendent link connected to the bell-crank lever, the lower rock-shaft connected to the link, the blocks having camslots and mounted on the lower rock-shaft,
and the horizontally-sliding nuts provided with side presser-heads, mounted on the lower bearing-boxes, and having arbors working in the cam-slots of the blocks; substantially as described.
7. A cigar packers press comprising a frame having a base formed with end bearingboxes, the lower rock-shaft having a crankarm and mounted in the base, the hollow camblocks having right and left cam-slots respectively, the horizontal sliding nuts provided with side presser-heads and mounted on the bearing-boxes, the pendent arbors secured to the horizontal sliding nuts and provided with antifriction-rollers working in the cam-slots, the upper rock-shaft having a crank-arm and lever-arm, the verticallysliding nut provided with the top presser head, the bell-crank lever connected to the vertically-sliding nut, and to the crank-arm of the upper rock-shaft and the pendent link connecting the bell-crank lever to the crank arm of the lower rockshaft; substantially as described.
8. A bnndling-frame comprising a bottom plate, the sliding side blocks having tongueand-groovejoint connection with the bottom plate, the sliding horizontal blocks having interlocking fingers, and tongue-and-groovejoint connection with the bottom plate and secured to the side blocks, the side plates sliding between the blocks and the thumbnuts whereby the horizontal blocks are secured immovably to the bottom plate; substantially as described.
9. A bundling-frame comprising a bottom plate, the sliding side blocks having tongueand-groove-joint connection with the bottom plate, the sliding horizontal blocks having interlocking fingers and tongue-and-groovejoint connection with the bottom plate and secured to the side blocks, the side plates sliding between the blocks, the plates surmonnting the horizontal blocks and covering the joints between the latter; substantially as described.
10. The bundling-frame comprising a bottom plate, the sliding side blocks having vertical channels and tongue-and-groove-joint connection with the bottom plates, the sliding horizontal blocks having interlocking fingers and tongue-and-groove-joint connection with the bottom plate, and secured to the side blocks, and the side plates sliding between the blocks and having cleats fitting in the vertical channels of the side blocks; substantially as described. a

A cigar-packefis press comprising the bundling-frame comprising a bottom plate, the sliding side blocks having vertical channels, the sliding horizontal blocks having intel-locking fingers and secured to the side blocks, the side plates sliding between the blocks and having cleats fitting in the vertical channels, and the side presser-heads having recesses fitting the side blocks and cleats; substantially as described.
12. A bundlingframe comprising side blocks, horizontal blocks having interlocking fingers, side plates sliding between the blocks, and the corner-blocks secured respectively to the horizontal blocks an d to the side plates; substantially as described.
13. A divided bundling-frame comprising a sectional bottom plate, sliding rear sections having sliding side plates, sliding and removable front sections, having sliding side plates and the sectional covering-plate; substantially as described.
