SPECIFICATION forming part of, Letters Patent No. 269,081, dated December 12, 1882.

Be it known that we, PETER N.MCGHESNEY and JOHN W. CRAIG, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-De' corticators; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specitication.
This invention relates to certain improvements in apparatus for decorticating grain; and it has for its objects to provide for thoroughly stripping and cleaning the grain with great rapidity, as more fully hereinafter specifred. lhese objects we attain by the means described, claimed,and illustrated in the accompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal sectional view of our improved apparatus; Fig. 2, a transverse sectional view on the line x x of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view on the line y y of Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a top View of the feed-hopper. y
The letter A indicates a rectangular casing, mounted upon suitable legs or supports, B. At one end ot' said casing is located a fan-chamber, C, which communicates with the interior of the casin g by means of an aperture, D, a fan, E, being located therein, and mounted on a longitudinal shaft, F, which is journaled in bearings G H, and provided at one end with a drivin g-pulley, I.
The letter K indicates a series of shafts extending longitudinally through the casin g, and having secured to them at equidistant spaces the decorticating-disks L, constructed 4of corundum or other decorticating material. 'The said shafts, with their disks, form rotary decorticators, any number of which may be employed, four being represented `in the present instance. These'are arranged to rotate in the longitudinal cylinders M, located in the casin g,
the said cylinders being constructed of4 semicylindrical horizontal sections, the lower sections being of perforated sheet metal and the upper sections of eticulated or woven material, as indicated, united together longitudinally in any suitable manner. The upper portions of the cylinders are constructed of Woven steel wire and the lower portions of iron perforated. The object of this is to save expense in tice that the abrasive action takes place in the sequently such parts are subjected to greater wear.
The letter N indicates a feed-hopper, which sets upon the top of the casing A, near one end. This hopper is divided by means ot' a vertical partition, P, having a series of open# ings, p, near the bottom; the larger compartvwings, R., hinged to the partition, which wings are pivoted between bars or strips secured to the hopper N. 'The said wings, being so arranged, may be shifted laterally, one at a time .or all together, in the latter instance the severalwings being connectedtogetherby meansof a suitable rod, for the purpose more fully here inafter specified. From the narrowercompart- -ment extend downwardly the tubes "T, which enter the respective longitudinal casings or cylinders near their forward ends, and serve to convey the grain to be decorticated thereto. From the opposite ends of said cylinders extend downwardly the discharge-tubes U V, the tubes U extending between the lower cylinders into the tube V, the tubes V being larger in cross-section than the lower ends ofthe tubes U, making a common discharge-spout for the twocylinders in vertical line with each other.
The operation of our invention is as follows: The grain is fed into the larger compartment ofV the hopper, and passes through the openings in the dividing-partition into the smaller compartment, and from thence intothe cylinders through the feed-pipes, the flow being regulated by shifting the gates so as to obstruct the passage of the grain to the apertures to a greater or less extent. The grain thus decombined pressure of the feed or the weight of theincoming grain, which, as it'fills the space feed-tube, overflows into the next space, and so on, and by the rotary action of the decorticators, and as cleaned is discharged through the tubes U and V into a common receptacle. The exhaust mechanism carries oiiI the dust and husks removed from the grain, the tendency being to draw the same into the fan-case and then discharge them.

The combination, in an apparatus for decorticati'ng grain, of two or more longitudinal cylinders, constructed of an upper and lower section of woven and perforated material, respectively of steel wire and iron, and the decorticators consisting of a series of spaced disks secured uponshafts, and the feed, discharge, and exhaust mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In an apparatus for decorticatiug grain, the combination, with the cylinders and decorticators, of the''eed-tubes and the feed-hopper having a partition provided lwith open` ings, through which the Igraiuis fed to the tubes, and with wings, whereby thefeed of thel vgrain is regulated, substantially as specied.
Y 3. In combination with the upper and lo'wer pairs ofdecort'icatingcylinders and thevdecor-V ticators, substantially as described, adapted to rotate therein, the upper and lower dischargetubes,` the one discharging into the other,.as specied.
4. The combination, in a decorticating apparatus,'of thelinclosing casing` having an eX- haust-aperture betweenthe cylinders, the eX- h-'aust mechanism adapted yto draw or suck the loose particles through said aperture, the feedhopper and tubes, a series of decorticating cylinders and disks, and the discharge-tubes, the whole constructed substantially as described, and arranged to operate as specified.
