UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICEO WILLIAM ORYE, OF WALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON TERRITORY.
MIDDLINGS-PURIFIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,018, dated September 13, 1881.
Application filed May 24,1880. Nb model.)
-To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM ORYE, of Walla Walla, in the county of Walla Walla and Territory of Washington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Middlings- Purifiers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to middlings-purifiers used in the process of manufacturing flour; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described.
The construction and operation will be particularly described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of a middlings-purifier constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line a: w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view, representing the endless screw and nut; and Fig. 4 is a face view of the nut.
Thesame letters of reference indicate the same or corresponding parts.
Ais the casing of the machine, supported on legs, provided with the feed-hopper a and feed-roller b at the top, and delivery-hopper c and conveyor 0? at the under side, as usual.
B is a suction-fan, placed at one end of the machine, connected by spout e with air-chamber f beneath hopper a, and communicating also with the air-chamber 9, that is above the screen h. The air-chamber f is formed by the sides and end of easing A and the inclined board 45, which extends from the end of spout c to near the upper end of the screen h.
r In the chamber f, above board i, there are fitted inclined boards k k, the upper one of which receives the material from feed-roller b and delivers it upon the next board, the material being thus passed down to board 1', from which it runs to the screen. The boards k It thus form a number of separate passages for the air drawn in at the front openings,l, so that the action of the blast upon the material is rendered. uniform and effective. m m are slides fitted at the openings 1, for regulating air is drawn from said chamber by the passage 10, leading to fan 13, and by the perforationsin partition n. These perforations are made larger toward the side of the machine, so that the draft through the screen will be equally as strong atthe sides as at the middle portion. The opening 19 is fitted with a slide, 0, for use in regulating the blast.
Beneath the screen it a frame, r, carrying brushes 1",isfitted in suitable slideways, so that it may be reciprocated and the screen kept clean by the action of the brushes. Beneath the frame, in suitable bearings, is fitted a screw, 8, cut with a double or endless thread, and fitted with a nut, t, that connects by a rod with the brush-frame r, so that by revolution of the screw the frame 1 is moved. The nut 25, as shown in Figs. 3 and'et, is formed with a right and a left hand thread, and is fitted for being tilted by contact with fixed pins at the end of its traverse to disengage one thread and engage the other, so that the nut will be reciprocated.
The screw 8 is to be rotated by suitable ,conneetions from the main driving-pulley, and the screen It is to be vibrated by an eccentric or crank in any desired manner.
Inoperation the material fed by hopper a is spread evenly by the feed-roller, and by boards 7c kpresented to the air in the best position for effective operation of the blast. The greater part of the dust and other impurities will be drawn out through the spout c. The partition it above the screen serves to equalize the action of the blast on the material while it is being screened, and the remaining impurities will be thoroughly removed.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the double-th readed rod 8, the double-threaded nut 00, suitable means for tilting said nut alternately in opposite directions at the ends of its course, andthe brush frame 7' r, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM ORYE.
