Q Attorney UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES MOGILL, OF LOCKPORT, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE RICHMOND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BRAN-DUVSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,388, dated October 13, 1891.
- Application filed May 15,1890- Serial No. 351,869. (No model.)
v To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES MCGILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lock port, in thecounty of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BranDusters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of thedrawings isa vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig.4is a perspective view in detail, and Fig. 5 is a sectional detail.
This invention relates to certain improvements in bran-clusters; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will appear hereinafter.
In the drawings, A is the closure or casing, semi-cylindrical in its upper portion and tapered in its lower portion into chute-like form and terminating in a trough-like compartment a, which contains the conveyer B, and having an outlet 1) at the head end communicating with the outlet-spout. The compartment a is provided in its bottom at the tail end with slides or cut'offs c to provide a series of discharge openings or outlets to divide up the flow into different grades.
C is the flour or dusting case or bolt, which is conical in longitudinal section and covered with fine wire-cloth and having upon the head thereof at its larger end a circular series of cogs or gear (Z, geared to a pinion e on the conveyer-shaft, by which it is driven. The heads of the bolt C are stepped upon the outer side and provided with hollow or tubular journals f, bearing in boxes f upon crosspieces of the casing-supporting frame A.
Revolving in the same direction as, but faster than, the dusting-case or bolt 0 and arranged within the same is a rotary brush D, adapted to clean the inside of said bolt or case and whose shaft f passes through the hollow or tubular journals f of said bolt and bearing in suitable boxes 9 upon cross-pieces of the frame A. The shaft f has near one end a pinion h, geared to a gear-wheel i, also secured to the shaft of the conveyer B, and near its other end said shaftf has a driving or belt pulleyj. The extreme portion of the latter end of said shaft f has an annular recess or groove is, engaged by a follower or plate Z, riding on the upper side edges of a bracket or frame m and having a recess Z coinciding with said recess or groove k and itself engaged by a hand-wheel screw 01, whereby the brush D is adapted to be adjusted nearer to or farther from the head or larger end of the dusting-case or bolt, as may be desired.
At the tail end of the casing A is the brandischarge spout E, and into this spout projects one end of the conveyer-shaft, upon' which is secured a wing-valve F, 'whose wings just pass at their outer edges the walls or sides'of said spout in order to obviate the escape of the blast produced bv the usual fan (not shown) with the discharge of the bran,
, which would result in the carrying away by the blast more or less of the flour. Also, by using this wing-valve a greater blast can be generated than previously, as no danger exists of the-escape of flour at the bran-discharge spout, whereby the meshes of the dusting-case or bolt-cloth can be thoroughly cleaned without the use of an additional brush on the outside of said bolt, as heretofore employed.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
In a bran-duster,the combination, with the case or closure containing the dusting-case or bolt and tapering at its lower portion into chute-like form and terminating in a trough a, which contains the conveyer, the tail end of said casing having abran-discharge spout E, one end of said conveyer-shaft projecting through into said spout, and awing-valve carried by said projecting end and having its wings just passing at their outer edges the walls or sides of the said spout, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES MOGILL. WVitnesses:
