MACHINE FOR PULVERIZING QUARTZ AND OTHER ORES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 247,946, dated October 4, 1881.

1' all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL O. PoMERoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atchisonin the county of Atehisou and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Pulverizing Quartz and Other Ores, of which the following is a specification. My invention consists of a novel construction [0 of machine for pulverizing quartz and other substances by means ofviolent percussion, and then collecting the resulting dust in a chamber having a series of partitions, in connection with a hollow column provided with a water- [5 spray at the top and a receptacle at bottom,

in the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of my machine. Fig. 2 is a view of the hollow cylinder and pulley for operating the radial arms and percussion-plates. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the hollow cylinder, showing also the feed-opening, discharge'tube, and a slide to admit air to the 2 cylinder. Fig. 4 is the bed-plate of the machine. 0 Upon a suitable bed-plate, A, are bolted the standards B, having at the top bearings for the horizontal shaft O, which is provided with pulley D, or other means to operate the same. Upon the same bed-plate is fastened the hol- 5 low cylinder G, which may be three feet in diameter, and, say, eight inches in length, the dimensions being varied as desired. This cylinder has a smooth interior and is made very strong. It is provided with a feed tube or opening, H, placed inside of the path of rotation of the percussion-plates F, so that the feed will not be obstructed by said plates or the radial arms E. A small adjustable slide, S, is used to regulate the admission of air as 4 5 desired. Attached to the circumference of this hollow cylinder is a dust discharge tube, K, provided With a Wire screen, U, to prevent the escape of coarse pieces'of quartz. A deflecting plate or elbow in the spout may be used for the same purpose. A slide, V, is used to regulate the discharge. A trap on the cylinder G, provided with slide I, serves to collect grains of metallic gold.
' The dust-chamber L has a series of partitions, M, for separating the falling dust into different grades, the coarser dust falling first, while the finer and lighter dust is carried onv to the more distantcompartments.
The hollow shaft N is connected with the dust-chamber by means of a tube or passage, on, through which the air passes to rise through the shaft. A small water-pipe, O, is crowned by a perforated hollow globe for the purpose of producing a spray to catch any residue of dust escaping from the chamber L with the current of air. This dust is thus washed down to the receptacle E at the bottom of the shaft N.
Operation: The shaft 0 and arms E are first set in motion at'full speedsay about three thousand revolutions per minute-and then small pieces of quartz are fed in at the spout H, when the swiftly-revolving plates F by severe concussion speedily disintegrate the quartz, however hard, and drive the dust out through tube K into the dust-chamber L.
The broad concussion-plates F, Fig. 6, (which may be cast with the arms E,) serve as fans in a fan-blower and produce a strong blast from cylinder G, through the pipe K, chamber L, and shaft N, the amount of air being regulated So by the slide S above mentioned.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The combination of the hollow cylinder G, radial arms with percussion-plates thereon, a dust and air escape tube or passage, a dustchamber with partitions therein, and the hollow shaft N, provided with water-spray P and I receptacle B, substantially as set forth.
