This invention relates to a punch. More particularly, it relates to a hand operated punch adapted to punch either shallow or deep notches along the margin of a card or the like.
Record and statistical cards, checks and. other paper records and documents are frequently provided with marginal perforations to enable coding to be notched into their marginal edges. Such cards or sheets are coded for classification by notching the cards marginally to provide an open notch or slot extendin from the edge of the card to one or more of the marginal perforations. A group of cards, checks or the like so coded and classified may be sorted by means of sorting needles or rods, which are extended through the marginal perforations in'a manner which is well known.
Marginally perforated cards, checks and the like such as referred to are usually supplied to the user without notching and are notched by the user according to his particular classification requirements. In small installations it is a common practice to notch such perforated .cards by means of a hand punch. Such punching involves diniculty where two rows of marginal perforations are provided, including an'outer row near an edge of the card and an inner row farther from such edge. It is necessary to punch out certain notches to the outer row of perforations and others to the inner row of perforations.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved hand operated punch which can be quickly and accurately manipulated to punch either a shallow punch or a deep punch.
It is a particular object of the present invention to provide a hand operated punch which may be easily and accurately adjusted to punch out shallow notches along the edge of a marginally perforated card, check or the like, to either the outer or inner row of perforations, as desired.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the ensuing description and the appended claims.
One form which the invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and .illus-' trated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the punch.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of thesame.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same.
Fig. 4 is .a transverse section taken along the line 44 of Fig. 1..
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of a'marginally perforated card punched to provide a shallow 2 notch and a deep notch by means of the punch of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a punch I comprising a main housing 2 having an upper section or chamber 3 and a lower section or chamber 4. A shelf 5 is provided between and extending the length of the upper and lower chambers, and upper and lower assembly members .8 and l are provided, as shown, having terminal flanges B abuttin the ends of the housing. Screws 5! in threaded engagement with the reinforcing members and the shelf are provided to hold these members securely in place. Th assembly members 6 and l are also provided with side flanges 22 and 22a, respectively, and assembly pins l! are provided, as shown, each pin it passing through the side flanges 22 or 22a and the side walls of the housing.
A di plate 169 is attached to the forward end of the assembly members-t and 1', said die plate having a die opening 5:3 shaped to cooperate with the punching member 29.
A punching member .26 is provided, being pivotally supported by a pin 21 secured to and extending between side flanges 22 of the upper assembl'y member 6 and having a forward arm 23 and another arm 24 extending downwardly through an opening 25 formed in the shelf 5 and assembly members ii and l, and also extending rearwardly. An operating handle 26 is provided for actuating the punching member, such handle being secured to the punching member 20 by a pin or screw 2? and being pivotally supported upon the pivot pin 2!. The handle 25 extends through a bottom opening 28 formed in the lower chamber 4. The forward arm 23 of the punch is provided with a head portion 29 including a stepped punching blade 30 having a rearward section 31 for cutting shallow notches and a forward section 32 for cutting deep notches as described hereinafter. ihe head portion 29 is also provided with a hatching gauge 33 at the rear of the rearward section 31 for a purpose described hereinafter.
The handle 25, and with it the punching mem her 255, are normally maintained in the position shown in Fig. 1, that is to say, the are urged in a clockwise direction, by means of a coil spring 3? compressed between a collar 38 on a pin it secured to the handle, and a socket it for-med in the lower assembly member and shelf. An adjus'table stop member 43 is provided for the purpose of forming deep or shallow notches as desired, such member being pivotally supported upon .a pin 44 extending between and through the side walls of the handle. The stop member 43 extends through an opening 45 formed in the handle 26 and it also extends into an opening 35a formed in the shelf and assembly members 5 and 'l. Th stop member E3 is also provided with a trigger it, an upper shoulder ill and a lower shoulder it and it is urged in clockwise direction by means of a coil spring 4;) compressed between a socket 58 formed in the lower arm of the punching member 2:] and a socket 5! formed in the stop member it, so as to cause the lower shoulder 48 to abut against the bottom wall of the handle as shown in Fig. 1.
A chips or cuttings receptacle 52 is also provided at the forward end of the punch, such receptacle having an open top adjacent the die opening 53 to receive the chips or cuttings and having a bottom opening or door 56 and with a slide 55 serving as a closure for the bottom door. A button having a scored surface 5? is provided, being secured to a pin 6%] fastened to and engaging the slide and secured, at its upper end, to a spring iii, the pin being received within a slot $2 formed in the bottom of the receptacle.
In operation, a marginally perforated card, check or the like indicated at 65 is inserted in the punch as shown, so as to abut the notching gauge For accuracy of alignment of the punching head 2% with the perforation which it is desired to notch out to the edge of the card, two markers 86 are provided (see Fig. 2) on either side of the punching head. If it is desired to punch out a shallow notch 6'1 to an outer perforation 68, as shown in Fig. 5, the handle 26 is squeezed inwardly against the coil spring 3! until the upper shoulder ll of the stop member 43 abuts the lower assembly member 'I. The shoulder 41 is so disposed as to abut the assembly member 7, and thus stop further pivotal movement of the punching member Ell, after the rearward section 3! of the punching blade 3d has punched a shallow notch but before the forward section 32 has been brought into contact with the card 65. If, on the other hand, it is desired to punch a deep notch $9 to an inner perforation it, the trigger 46 is squeezed inwardly, thus pivoting the stop member it to cause the upper shoulder 47 to clear the reinforcing member I, and at the same time the handle 2%; is squeezed inwardly to its limit. The punching member 2i] will thus pivot further causing the forward section 32 to make a deep punch. To provide adequate clearance for the handle 26 in making a deep punch, a notch 42 is provided therein, which receives the rear assembly pin 4!.
To disassemble the punch for repairs or the like,
the assembly pins ii are knocked out, the upper and lower chambers 3 and 4 are disengaged from the assembly members, the punching member 20 and handle 25 are removed by knocking out the pivot pin 2 5, etc. The parts are readily re-assembled, as will be apparent.
It will thus be seen that a hand operated punch has been provided which is simple in design, which can be readily disassembled for repairs, if necessary, and which is easy to operate and is effective to punch out deep or shallow notches as desired.
While I have shown the preferred form of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in its construction by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent is:
l. A hand operated card punch comprising, a die, a stepped punching member having a first and second face for punching out a shallow notch when said first face is passed through said die, and a deeper notch when said second face is passed through said die, handle sections on said die and punching member, said handles being pivotally mounted to one another, resilient means disposed between and connected to said handle sections to constantly urge said die and punching member away from one another, stop means disposed between said handle sections, said stop means normally engaging one of said handle sections and adapted to engage the opposite handle section when the handles are pivoted toward one another to a sufficient degree to have caused only the first face of said punching member to have completed its notch, and inactivating means on said stop means operable to move said stop means to such position as to preclude said stop means from engaging said handle sections, whereby said handle sections can be pivoted to such a position that said second face of said punch is passed through said die and said deep notch is cut.
2. A hand operated card punch comprising a die, a stepped two faced punching member, handle sections for said die and punch, said handle sections pivotally mounted to one another whereby pivotal closing movement of said handle sections will cause said punching member to pass into said die, means on the handle sections for stopping pivotal closing movement of said handle sections when one face of said punch has passed into said die to effectuate a punching operation characteristic of that face, and manually operable means on one of said handles operable when actuated in inactivating the last said means to allow said pivotal closing movement to continue, whereby the second face of said punching member is also passed into said die and a punching operation is eifectuated which is characteristic of both faces of said punch.
3. A hand operated card punch comprising a die, a stepped punching member having a first face for punching out a shallow notch in a card when said first face is passed into said die, and a second face for punching out a deeper notch in a card when said second face is subsequently passed into said die, handle sections on said die and punching member, said handles being pivotally mounted to one another whereby pivotal movement of said handles toward one another will cause said punching member to pass into said die, stop means disposed between said handle sections, said stop means having a shoulder at one end thereof normally engaging one of said handle sections, and a shoulder at the other end thereof operable to engage the opposite handle section, and the distance between said shoulders being such that when said handle sections are pivotally moved toward one another and said shoulders engage said handle sections to preclude further pivotal movement thereof, said first face of said punching member will have passed into said die and have punched the shallow notch only and thus said second face will be precluded from punching said deeper notch, and inactivating means on said stop member having a portion thereof extending from one of said handle sections so as to be capable of being grasped along with said handle section, and when so grasped operable to move said stop means to such a position as to preclude the shoulders of said stop means from engaging said handle sections, whereby said handle sections can be pivoted to such a position that said first face will be passed into said die and said second face will be passed into said die whereby a deeper notch will be cut in said card.
4. A hand operated card punch comprising a die, a two faced stepped punching member having a first face for punching out of a card a shallow notch when said first face is passed into said die and a second face for punching out of a card a deeper notch when said second face is subsequently passed into said die, handle sections on. said die and said punching member, said handles being pivotally mounted to one another whereby pivotal movement of said handles toward one another will cause said punching member to pass into said die, resilient means disposed between and engaging said handle sections to constantly urge said handle sections away from one another, stop means pivotally mounted in one of said handle sections, said stop means having a first shoulder engageable with the handle section within which said stop means is mounted, resilient means constantly urging said first shoulder into engagement with said handle section, a second shoulder on said stop member engageable with the opposite handle section as said handle sections are pivotally moved toward one another, said second shoulder being spaced such a distance from said first shoulder that when said second shoulder engages said handle section and precludes further pivotal movement of said handle sections toward one another, said first face will have passed into said die and out said shallow notch, and an extension on said stop means protruding beyond and generally parallel with the handle section in which said stop means is pivotally mounted, said extension so positioned as to be capable of being grasped along with said handle section and when so grasped as to pivot said stop means to such a position that References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Number Name Date 682,208 Lemen Sept. 10, 1 1 708,465 Cottrell Sept. 2, 1 2
