To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANFoR'rH H.ROYen of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FlyF-ans or Brushes and Ventilators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip- 'tion of t'heinvention, such as will enable others i skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates toan improvement in ventilators and iy fans or brushes-5J and itconsists, rst, in the combination ot' a suitabledriving mechanism, ashaft provided with a friction-wheel which is adjustable back and forth thereon, and a vertical shaft having a friction-wheel ou its lower end and adjustable arms 0r blades upon its upper end, whereby the vertical shaft" can be made to revolve at any desired rate of speed.
1t still further consists in the combination, with the vertical shaft, of a supporting-plate provided with a spring locking device, and a suitable toothed plate which is Vplaced upon the top of the supporting-plate, and the rel volvin g arms which are provided with a toothed segment to engage with the toothed plate, whereby each one ofthe arms can be adjusted to the same angle at the same time.
The object of my invention is to provide a ventilator fly brush or fan which is especially adapted for restaurants, lunch-counters, and tables, and in which the arms can all be given the same inclination, so that it will create a draft of air in any desired direction.

l A represents an inclosing box or frame, which maybe placed upon a lunch counter or table, and in which the springactuated drivin g mechanism Bis placed. 1f preferred, this driving mechanism may be placed underneath the counter, and then have the driving-shaft passed up through` it, in which case the driving mechanism may be securedto the under side of the counter, or to any other suitable support, and the box or frame dispensed with. By using a box or frame, however, the fan is made portable, and can be used wherever it may be desired. A, or the counter or table, is the lower end of the standard F, which receives the clampingnut G on its lower end for the purposeof holding the standard rigidly in place. Passed up,`
through this standard is the driving-shaft H, upon the lower end of which is placed the friction-wheel I. This vertical shaft has a slight verticalplay, so that the friction-wheel upon its lower end vcan be raised up out of contact with the driving friction-wheel, and so that the driving friction-wheel can be adjusted lback and forth under it for the purpose of increasing or decreasing the speed at which the arms are being driven. As the whole weight of the vertical shaft and the driving-arms will rest ldirectly upon the driving friction-wheel, sufticient frictional contact is always insured to drive the vertical shaft.
Secured to the vertical driving-shaft above the top ofthe standard is a supporting-plate, J, through which passes a spring locking device, L, of anysuitable description. Upon the top of this supporting-plate is placed the adjusting plate or wheel N, which has beveled teeth upon its outer edge, andwith which the toothed `sections O upon the arms or fans P engage.
Upon the top of the toothed plate or wheel is placed a suitable casting, R, which has a number of sockets proportioned to the number of arms or fans which are to be used, and which casting is secured to the driving-shaft in any suitable manner. Each one of the arms or fans has its innerend swiveled in its socket, so that it can turn partially around for the purpose of being adjusted to any desired augle. As each one ot' the arms or fans has Va segment which meshes with the plate or wheel, it isonlynecessary to loosen the spring-catch, and then turn the wheel or plate, when each one ofthe arms or fans will be adjusted at the same time to the same angle. By means ot' this adjustment the fans can be turned so as to produce a current ot' air in any direction ICC while revolving. Secured to the standard at a suitable distance below the fans are the arms S, of which there maybe any desired number, and upon which bananas and other such fruit may be hung. Below these arms may be placed a suitable basket, T, for holding fruit, cakes, nuts, or any other things of a similar nature. Upon the lower end ot' the standard will extend from eachA side an arm which will serve as a support for a easter.
Itis only necessary to wind up the springmotor, and then adjust the lever which shifts the driving friction-wheel to any one ofthe notches in the hanging frame U, when the 'arms or fans will continue to revolve at a desired rate of speed until the spring has Vrun dow-n. When the fans are adjustedvertically they produce a very pleasant draft of air, which can be felt for a considerable distance beyond the fan. This fan can also'be operated by steam or any other motor that may be preferred.
Having thus described my invention, I claimv 1. In a y-fan and ventilator, the combination of a motor, the shaft C, driven thereby, and provided with the shifting friction-Wheel, with the shaft H, having the wheel I on its lower end and a series ot' fans secured to its adjusted at the saine time, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the revolving` shaft having a suitable casting provided with sockets secured to its upper end, ofa number of fans or arms which are swiveled in these sockets, and each one provided with a segment, and an adjusting-plate, whereby all of the fans or arms can be adjusted at the same time, substantially as set forth.
i 4. In a y brush or fan, lthe combination of the standard through which the'vertioal operating-shaft passes, and which standard vis provided with arms on which fruit and other such things can be hung, and a basket, substantially as specified.
