UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
7 JOHN WESLY OARLY, OF MEXIA, TEXAS.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of jLettersPatent No. 293,850, dated Application filed August 211883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it vmayconcern:
Be it known that I, J OHN W. CARLY, a citizen of the United States-and a resident of Mexia, in the county of Limestone and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Advertising; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same,-'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved advertising device. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, with the governor omitted, and Fig. 3 is a verticalsectional view through the central staff or supporting-post.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to advertising devices or apparatus, in the nature of a rotary I sign adapted for display in the open air, or in shop-windows; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A denotesthe fixed staff or uprighton which the rotary vanes B and G are mounted. The larger of the two vanes, B, has an opening, I), for the insertion of the smallerinside vane. O, the lower part of which has an inwardly-bent lip or step, a, bearing upon a collar, a, fixed upon the staff so as to hold the inside vane'in its proper position relatively to the outside vane, within which it plays. The outside vane, B, has a socket, D, at the top, into which the top of the staff A is inserted, and its lower end has an inwardly-bent lip or step, e, which is perforated for the insertion of the stafi, and operates to keep the outside vane in its proper position upon the staff relatively to the inside vane. The latter should be painted in gay colors; or it may be gilt or silvered, or other- February 19, 1884.
wise attractively ornamented. The advertisement or advertisements are displayed upon both sides of the larger outside vane, or, if desired, upon oneor both sides of both the vanes. When placed in the open air, or' in a roomwhere there is a draftof air, both the vanes will rotate, on accountof their bent or elongated S shape, which forms bent fans on opposite sides of the central staff, adapted to catch the wind.
If used in a shop-window, or at places where there. is no draft to operate the device,
the staff may be provided with a pulley, E,
and operated with an endless belt by any suitable powersuch as a gas-engine, or small vsteam-enginein which case the vanes may be provided with a governor, F, for regulating automatically the speed at which they are to rotate.
Having thus described my invention, I clai m and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The described advertising apparatus or device, consisting of the fixed staff or upright A, bent rotary vane B, having the opening b,
and adapted for the display of advertisements,
and inside bent rotary vane, G, substantially as set forth.
2.- In an advertising apparatus or device,
the combination of the fixed staff or upright A, having pulley E. bent rotary vane B, having the opening b, and adapted for the display of advertisements, inside bent rotary vane, O, and the governorF, adapted to regulate automatically the speed at which the vanes are to revolve, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony-that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereuntoaffixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN WESLY ,OARLY.
WVitnesses:
O. A. KENNEDY, J. W. OWEN.
