. IMPROVEMENT IN SIGNS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 175,01 7, dated March 21, 1876; application filed November 15, 1875.
hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.
My invention is an improvement in stormsigns of that class which allow a free passage of the air through them; and its object is to make such a sign ornamental and at the same time to preserve a perfect outline of the letters, characters, or figures.
My invention therein consists principally in forming openings through the bodies of the letters, characters, or figures composing the sign, and suspending within such openings pendants or medallions of any desired form or size, and of any suitable material; and, further, a sign composed of the peculiar letters, characters, or figures, hung in a metallic frame, all as more fully hereinafter explained.
To enableothers skilledin the art to make my invention, I proceed to describe the same in connection with the drawings, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of the sign, and Fig. 2 a vertical section on the line of the openings and suspended pendants of onefot the letters.

A represents the letters, characters, or iigures of the sign, which'are preferably constructed of non-corrosive sheet metal.
Each of these letters has made through it a series of openings, a, of any desired form or size,` Vand following the form of the letter. Within the openings are suspended pendants or medallions c. These pendants are of any form 'or size, smaller than the openings, but preferably of the same form as the openings, and are suspended loosely in suchopenings, so as to allow the wind to pass freely through them. It is desirable in ornamental signs to make the pendants of different material from the letters, and for that purpose wood, glass, or metal can be used, in their natural colors or painted. The wind passing through the openings causes the pendants to vibrate, thus attracting attention to the sign and at the sametime preventing it, in some measure, from being blown down.
B is a metallic frame, in which the letters A are hung by the Wires b, which rigidly connect such letters .with the top and bottom bars of the frame. ported in this manner, leave spaces between them for the passage of the currents of air, and also present a very attractive appearance.
The frame can be hung in any convenient way, but is shown in the drawings as pivoted to the horizontal bar O, and thereby forming a vSwingin g sign.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A letter, character, or gure, through Vwhose body openings are made in which pendants are pivoted and adapted to vibrate,
'substantially as described and shown.v
2. The letters, characters, or figures A, i
having openings c and pendants a', and hung in the metallic frame B, substantially as described and shown.
This sp ecitication signed and witnessed this 29th day of October, 1875.
