WAGON 0R LIFTING JACK. 110,268,488. Patented Dec. 5, 1882.

LORAVB. HOIT, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
WAGON OR LIFTING JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,488, dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed October 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORA B. HOI'I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the "county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements vin Wagon or Lifting Jacks, of which the following is a specification, retereneeb eiug had to the accompanying drauing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The invention is designed to increase the strength of such implements and to add to their general efficiency, and is an improvement upon that class of lifting-jacks in which metallic notched plates are bolted or attached to the wooden standard.
The drawing is a perspective view of the invention, showing it in a position to sustain a wagon-axle or other object.
A is the base, and B the standard. The base is mortised, and receives a tenon formed at the bottom of the standard, the two parts being held together by means ot' the pin a.
O is a castmetallic plate, bolted or otherwise united to the front edge of the standard B, which plate is provided with notches b and a foot or bracket, 12. The bracket 11 at its point is riveted or bolted to the base A, as shown at c. The plate 0 extends along the front edge of the standard up to a point about midway of its height. At the opposite or rear edge of the standard B, and rising trom a point about equal in height from the base reached by the front plate, 0, is a cast metallic plate, D, having notches d, opening upward at an angle, as shown. The plate D is bolted or otherwise secured to the standard.
E is the lever, slotted so as to enable it to fit over the standard, and provided with a transverse pin, 6, which, when the implement is in the act of supporting an object, rests in any one of the notches d.
F is the shackle or link, loosely hung to the top of the lever at f, the lower end of the shackle being adapted to enter anyone of the notches but the metallic plate 0, which notches open downward or in order the reverse of that of those of the rear plate, D. When the load is upon the outer end of the lever the line of compressive strain is broughtdiiectlyoverand upon the foot or bracket 0, which is made stout to sustain the weight imposed upon it, while the upward and lateral strain communicated through the link or shackle If is brought upon and against the trout metallic plate, U, which, by reason of its being firmly secured to the base, relieves the wood of the standard from a tearing action of the bolts which unite the plate O thereto. Thus the strain upon the implement, both compressive and teusile,is provided for and equally distributed. v
The operation of the implement is apparent and need not be described.
r This implement combines strength with simplicity and cheapness, and, in view of the provision for the equalization of strains to which it is subjected, is not liable to become disarranged in its parts. t
I claim as my invention- In a Wagon or lii'tingjack, the combination, with the base A, standard B, and rear plate, D, of the front notched metallic plate, (3, having the foot or bracket 1), substantiallyas set forth.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto set-my hand and at'tixed my seal this 25th day of September, 1882.
