Description

E. KISLIG EYELASH CURLER July 27, 1954 Filed May 26, 1952 FIGS as: a "L Patented July 27, 1954 EYELASH CURLER Ernest Kislig, Rosebank, Johannesburg, Transvaal, Union of South Africa Application May 26, 1952, Serial No. 290,005
9 Claims.
This invention relates to the curling of eyelashes and to apparatus for effecting such curlmg.
Eyelash curlers are known which operate to grip the eyelashes between two jaws and kink or bend them so that they take a straight-up or somewhat vertical curved set. It is considered that the eyelashes are given a more artistic set if, while they are curled upwardly they are given an inclination outwardly, that is away from the nose.
It is the object of this invention to provide acurler whereby the hairs making up the eyelashes may be more uniformly and artistically curled than with the devices at present known.
According to this invention tongs are provided for effecting the curling of the eyelashes, said. tongs consisting of two arcuate jaws, one fixed to a suitable handle and. the other co-operating with the first and movable towards and rotationally about the arc of the first jaw.
A further feature provides that the movable jaw has a serrated edge, has a rubber cushion at its line of contact with the fixed jaw and has its movements made in steps and automatically controlled.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the curler with part of the handle cut away.
Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation on the line a-a Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a plan view and Fig. 4 is a detail.
In the preferred form of the invention, and as shown in the drawings, the curler consists of two jaw tongs. The fixed jaw I of the tongs takes the form of a narrow strip of metal of an arcuate shape so that it may be brought to lie fiat against the eyelid adjacent to the eyelashes. This strip is carried at its ends by supports 2, 2, projecting from a suitable handle 3.
The handle 3 accommodates a stem 4 carrying a second jaw 5. The movable jaw 5 is adapted to be moved towards the fixed jaw I.
Both jaws I, 5, are curved concentrically and approximately in an arc of a circle with a diameter as near as possible to correspond to the curve of the normal eyelid.
The second jaw 5 has an upstanding edge shorter than the length of the fixed jaw I and when the tongs are closed jaw 5 lies close against the outside of jaw I and overlaps it slightly. On the inside, the jaw 5 is thickened and channelled so that the bottom edge of jaw I seats in the 2 channel 6 which is conveniently filled with rubber or like material to form a bed for the bottom edge of jaw I. Supports 1, I, 1, springing from the top of stem 4 carry the jaw 5 in the desired position in relation to jaw I.
The top and overlapping outside edge 8 of jaw 5 is roughened or serrated and the surface of the rubber bed may have a shallow depression in which the bottom edge of jaw I may rest.
The curve of the jaws I and 5 are arcuate so that once they are brought into contact, by the upward movement of jaw 5, the jaw 5 can be rotated to sweep round the curve of jaw I for a limited distance.
To carry out the required movements of jaw 5 in, a simple form of curler, its supporting stem #3 passes through the handle 3 to terminate in an operating knob 9. The handle 3 is furnished with a compression spring II] which, pressing on collar II, forces the stem 4 upwardly. I2 is a cap to support the lower end spring I0.
In use the curler is brought towards each eye in turn. The jaws I, 5 are initially separated and fixed arcuate jaw I is positioned on the eyelid just above the eyelashes so that the eyelashes project into the space between the jaws I, 5. The lower jaw 5 is now moved towards the first one, and when the eyelashes are engaged between the two jaws I, 5 but not gripped by them, the eyelashes will be held by the roughness or serrations on the edge 8 of the second or movable jaw 5. The second jaw 5 is now rotated a small amount by turning the stem 4 to move said jaw 5 in a direction away from the nose. This movement inclines the eyelashes held by the edge 8 of jaw 5 in the desired direction and the movable jaw is then brought into contact with the first not only to bring the edge 8 to overlap the same but to press the eyelashes into the depression in the rubber bed of channel 6. Thus the eyelashes between the jaws I and 5 are bent upwardly while being inclined outwardly to give them by such double movement an effective curl.
The required movement of jaw 5 may be carried out manually by the proper manipulation of knob 9.
However, to promote the proper sequence of operations, a cap I2 may be provided with a cam face as shown in Fig. 4. I3 is a projection on the knob 9 which under the action of spring I0 is made to contact the cam face of the cap I2. If the knob 9 and consequently stem 4 is turned in the direction of the arrow Fig. 4 the jaw 5 is first held by the portion I I of the cam on cap I2 a distance from jaw I. The curler is 3 brought into position with the eyelashes between the jaws l, 5. On further turning stem 4 the projection is meets the part 15 which allows the distance between jaws l and 5 to decrease and the serrations on edge 8 to engage the eyelashes.
The movement of projection 13 along the part 15 allows the jaw 5 to rotate through a distance equal to the difference in length between jaw I and jaw 5 and then at the end of part [5 of the cam surface the projection 13 drops off, the limit of rotation of jaw 5 has been reached and the jaws I, 5 nip the eyelashes under the action of the spring 19 to curl them, set as they now are, that is curved somewhat away from the nose.
To allow the curler to be operated easily and with one hand, if desired, the stem 4 may be provided with a suitable means for rotating it through the small are required. For example a segmental shaped arm 5 may be provided. It has a milled edge 5"! by whichit may be engaged by afinger of the hand-holding the handle 3 to swing it the small distance in the direction required. The'arrow on the cam indicates a setting for the curler to operate on the eyelashes oi the right or left eye.
This invention provides a mechanical curler whereby the eyelashesmay be suitably positioned and bent for effective curling.
What I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
