' EYELASH CURLER {\ND MASCARA APPLIER Filed Jan. 5. 1946 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented July 13, 1948 UNITED STATES -PATENT OFFICE EYELASH CURLERVAND MASCARA APPLIER 4 v 1 1 Ada Marcellus, New York, N. Y. I I Application January 3, 1946, Serial No. 638,797
9 Claims. (01. 132-32) This invention-relates to new and useful improvements in an eyelash curler and mascara applier.
More particularly the invention proposes a new and improved eyelash curler and mascara. applier, which is arranged to conveniently apply mascara, or petroleum jelly or other substances of the eyelashes while curling them. It is proposed to so construct the curler and applier that it may also be' used for applying false eyelashes to the ends of the natural eyelashes.
More particularly the invention proposes to characterize the new andimproved'eyelash curler b-y'the fact that a'brush isremovably associated with it, and positioned so as toapply mascara, or petroleum jelly, or other substances to the eyelashes while the eyelashes are being curled.
The invention contemplates a simple construction by which the brush may be easily removed and replaced, as desired.
It is also proposed toyso construct the curler that a top rest portion may engage against the bone beneaththe eyebrows so as to. steady the curler while being used.
The invention also proposes an arrangement by which the brush may be adjusted to various positions in relation'to the eyelash curler, so as to control the amount of mascara, or jelly, or other substances applied to the lashes. 1
Still further the invention proposes anew and improved eyelashcurler and mascara applier as briefly explained, which is efficient in operation and which may be manufactured andsold at a reasonable cost. I
For further comprehension of the invention,
and of the objects and advantages thereof, ref.- erence' will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
- Fig. l'is a perspective view of an eyelash curler and mascara applier, embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 isa side elevational view of the curler and applier shown in Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged verticalsectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l.- Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged detailed view of a portion of Fig. 2 looking-in the direction of the line 4-4 thereof.-
.Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the brush, illustrated perse. I, V
is a fragmentary side elevational view Fig. 6
I 2 similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary elevational view looking in the direction ofthe line 'I'I of Fig. 6.
The eyelash curler and mascara applier, in accordance with that form of the invention disclosed in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, includes a stationary curved strip I0 adapted to be engaged against ones eyelid at a point above the eyelashes. The strip Iil is associated with and supported by a handle II. This handle II is formed from a length of wire which is bent at the center to form a finger engaging loop portion I2. The top portions of the side arms I4 of the handle II are spaced from eachother, and are parallel, and are connected with the ends of the station ary curved strip II).
A moveable curve strip I6 is engageable against the stationary strip I0 in such a manner as to be capable of clamping the eyelashes between them to curl them in the usual way. The moveable curved strip I6 is in the nature of a length of wire which continues into side arm I! continuing into a bottom connecting section I8. A resilient member I9 such as a rubber-tube is mounted upon said movable curved strip "5 so as to engage against the bottom edge of the stationary curved strip II) when these strips are forced together. The moveable strip I6 is associated with handle means by which it may be moved. This handle means comprises a handle 22 formed from a length of wire bent at the center so as to form a finger engaging loop 23. The handle 22 has side arm portions which are pivotally connected intermediate of their ends by a pintle .24 with the handle II. The ends of the side arms of the handle 22 are formed with openings 25 through which said bottom connecting section I8 pivotally passes. Loop-like guide members 21 are soldered, or in any other way connected with the end portions 'of the curved strip I6, and slidably engage upon the side arms l4 by which the curved strip I6 is guided towards and away from the stationary gear curve strip I0. I
A brush 3!) is indirectly connected with the movable curve strip I6 and is provided with bristles 3I which extend along and slightly above said curve strip I6. The brush 30 has a brush back 32 from which bristles 3| project. This brush back 32 is provided with a projection 33 at the back which may be gripped and serves as a handle by which the brush 30 may be easily removed and replaced upon the curler.
The brush-30 is indirectly [connected with the strip I6 by fingers 35 soldered on and projectin from the loop-like guide members 21. These fingers 35 are formed from heavy wire. The brush back 32 of the brush 35 is formed with openings 36 into which the fingers 35 engage. The fingers 35 are substantially parallel. The openings 35 aresimilarly directed. However, the fingers 35 are ofiset relative to the openings 35 so that it is necessaryto yerysligh tly flex the fingers 35 when the brush 3B i mounted thereon. This re siliency is depended upon to releasably hold the brush 38 in position. Furthermore, the fingers 35 are directed upwards. The brush 35 is placed upon the fingers 35 by moving 'it downward-s. Since the curved strip l6 moves upward toengage the bottom of the curve strip IO, the brush 35 will be naturally clamped in position-'whiletl-ie eyelash curler is moved to its closed position.
The handle [I is associated with top rests 33 adopted to engage beneath the eyebrows and against the e ebrow bone. The's'e' to'p r sts 38 are in the nature of small angle members, see 2. They have rlat ivelyflat tdp portlons fi and substantially vertical smepdrtiohs At. "The vertical-side portions 45 are s'o'lderedt'o' inturned ends 4| of the side arms M of the'handle l'l.
The operation of the new and improved eyelash cur'ler and mascara applier may be understood from the iollowin gz v 'I heb rush 30 maybe easily removed by grip ping t by the handle projection 33 and puni ng it upwards so as to disconnect it fr'ornthe fingers '35. Now the mascara, or other substa c s, maybe applied to the bristles 3|. The brush 3|l maybe replaced on the fingers35, or the mascare. or other substances may be engaged at the bristles 3| while the brush ;is in .positi'dn on the fingers 35. Now the eyelash curler maybe used in the usual way. The curved strip ID is placed against the eyeliddirectly above .the eyelashes'. The top rests'38 are engaged beneath the eyebrow andrest ed against the eyebrow bone. Now the handle 7.2 is pivoted towards the handle so that the curved strip l6 moves upwards and clamps ,theeyelashea; which project between t e strips l5 and Hi, against the bottoni edge of the strip |l. While the eyelashes are thus being clamped, the bristle sl brush against "the e e lashes, and transfer the asc'ara to the lashes,
In-Figs. 6 and] a modified can of the invention has been disclosed which differs from the prior form in several ways. The returne end portions l 1" of the side arms it are provided with smallrubber tubes X which compr ses the top rests .for engaging beneath the eyebrow so that the eyelash curler may be steadied. bru sli '5l ls removably mounted upon the fingers, 35. Said brush M has lugs 52 at its ends. Adjustment screw 53 turnably engaged through the lugs 52 and engage loop-lilre guide members 5'4 which are slidably mounted-on the side ar rns Hi. These loop-"like guide members are connected with the end portions of the curved st'ri p |6 iormovably supporting said curved strip I6. The brush :51 has bristles 55 which are directed against a resilient strip 19 which is mounted on the curve strip Hi. The brush 5| is provided with a back proj t n. 6-, In other respects this form of the invention istidentical to the priorforrn and like parts. may
be recognized by the same reference numerals The operation of this form the ante nas is identical to he. p i r ,fQ ..1d i ai v in the fact that thescrews53 may be turned "in one direction, or the other, so as to move the brush 5| towards or away from the resilient strip IQ of the curved strip Hi. The fingers 35 flex during this adjustment. Mascara or other substances may be placed on the bristles 55 of the brush 5| for application as previously explained. The brush 5| may be removed by removing the screw 53 and then forcing the brush 5| upwards and off of the fingers 35.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim-as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
