M- S- IKEDA CHANGE PURSE July 13,
Filed June 29 TTORA/Eys Patented July 13, i954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHANGE PURSE Mike S. Ikeda, Midway City, Calif.
Application June 29, 1951, Serial No. 234,196
(Cl. G-37) 3 Claims.
This invention relates to change purses.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved change purse which is simple in construction, which has relatively few parts, which is provided with means for holding coins of different denominations, and which is arranged to provide convenient access to the contents thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved change purse which is inexpensive to manufacture, which is sturdy in construction, Which is easy to open and close as desired, which includes means for holding respective stacks of coins of diierent denominations and for preventing loss of the coins when the billfold is closed, and which is compact in size.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a billfold having a change purse according tothe present invention as a part thereof, with the cover element for the coin compartment; of the billfold in closed position;
Figure 2 is a Side elevational View of the assembly of Figure 1, shown in closed position;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing the cover of the change compartment in vertical, open position;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal, vertical, cross-sectional view taken through the assembly of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal, vertical, cross-sectional view taken through the assembly of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the recessed block and its support, forming the coin-holding portion of the assembly of Figure 1;
Figure 7 is an enlarged cross-sectional, detail view taken along the line 'I--l of Figure 6;
Figure 8 is an enlarged perspective View of the latch member employed in the forward marginal portion of the block member of Figure 6 to releasably secure the cover of the coin compartment.
Referring to the drawings, the combination billfold and change purse is designated generally at II, and comprises a main body I2 of ilexible material, such as leather or the like, formed to dene side-by-side pockets for receiving small bills and large bills, respectively, said body I2 being stitched along the longitudinal margin of the main body at I5, and transversely at the respective ends of said body at |16 and II. The lefthand portion of the body above defined is provided with a pocket I8 open at its upper edge, as viewed in Figure 1, and adapted to receive identification cards and the like, said pocket being provided with a transparent windou7 I9. Secured on the right side portion of the abovedescribed body is a rigid plate member 2@ on which is secured a rectangular block 2|. Hinged to the inner transverse edge of the plate member 2li at 22 is a transverse bar member 23.
The block 2| is formed with a rst relatively large recess 26 adapted to receive miscellaneous items, such as surplus coins and the like, and with a second recess 25 which is formed at its respective corners with generally cylindrical cavities 26 shaped to receive respective stacks of coins of diierent denominations, for example, pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. The large cavity 25 is formed with a pair of opposite arcuate well elements 2l, 28 of equal radius and arranged to receive a stack of relatively large coins, such as half dollars, therebetween, as shown in Figures 5 and 6. It Will be noted that the cavity 25 is arranged so that access may be had at all times to any one of the coin recesses 26 for removing coins therefrom or to the central stack of coins from the interior of the cavity 25, whereby the removal of any desired coin is facilitated.
Hinged to the inner transverse margin of the block member 2| at 29 is a rigid cover member 30 arranged to overlie the recessed block 2|, as shown in Figure 5, said cover member 33 being provided with a hook detent lug 3| adapted to enter a slot 32 formed in the outer transverse marginal portion of the block 2 I. Said transverse marginal portion is formed with a cavity 33 in which is axially secured an elongated pin member 34 on which is slidably mounted a rectangular box 4B, the cavity 33 being similarly shaped so that the box 40 may slide longiutdinally in said cavity. Surrounding the pin member 34 is a coil spring 36 which bears at one end on a washer 3i secured to pin member 34 and which bears at its other end on the opposite end wall of the box member 4I). Said box member is therefore biased to the left, as viewed in Figure 7. The top wall of the box member is formed with a slot 39 in which the hooked lug 3| is receivable, as shown in Figure '7, the lug 3| lockingly engaging through the slot 39 and fastening the cover 3Q in closed position, as shown in Figure 5. Secured to the outer longitudinal wall of the box member ri is a headed pin member 35 which extends outwardly through the end of block 2|, the shank of said pin member 35 extending slidably through a slot 3 4| in the Wall of the block 2|, whereby the pin member 35 may be manually moved laterally to disengage the hooked lug 3| from the slot 39. Designated at 42, 42 are respective springs secured to the block 2| adjacent the hinge connection 29 of the cover member 3|] thereto, said springs 42, 42 acting upwardly on the cover Si? and biasing said cover to open position. When the hook member 3| is disengaged from slot 39 by manually moving the headed pin member to the right, as viewed in Figure 6, the cover is released and is moved to elevated position ie springs 42, 42.
The right end of body is provided with a flexible flap or tab 43 having secured to its end the female snap fastener element 44 which is adapted to lockingly engage a male snap fastener element 45 provided at the other end of body |l to secure the combination billfold and change purse in closed position, as shown in Figures 2 and 4.
While a specific embodiment of an improved combination billfold and change purse has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications Within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as dened by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A change purse comprising a iiat body of flexible material, a block member positioned on the inner face of said body and secured thereto, said block member being formed with a plurality of large recesses, at least one of said large recesses being formed with a plurality of generally circular cavities, each cavity being shaped to receive a stack of coins of a particular denomination, each cavity having an open side affording access to the coins therein from the interior of said one of the large recesses, a cover member hinged to the inner transverse edge of said block member and arranged to overlie said block member, interengaging releasable latch means carried by the cover member and the outer transverse edge of said block member, and spring means biasing said cover member to open position.
2. A change purse comprising a nat body ci flexible material, a block member positioned on the inner face of said body and secured thereto, said block member having a recess formed in its Walls with generally cylindrical cavities shaped to receive respective stacks of coins, each cavity opening into said large recess to afford access to the coins therein from the interior of the large recess, a pair of opposite walls of said large recess being arcuate in shape and equal in radius, whereby a stack of relatively large coins may be received between said opposite Walls, a cover member hinged to the inner transverse edge of said block member and arranged to overlie block member, spring means biasing said cover member to open position, and interengaging releasable latch means carried by the cover member and the outer transverse edge of said block member.
3. A change purse comprising a flat body of flexible material, a transverse bar member positioned along the midportion of said body, a block member positioned on the inner face of said body and extending between said transverse member and one end of said body, said block member being provided with a recess, cover member hinged to the inner transverse edge of said block member arranged to overlie said block member, said block member being hinged to said bar member, and interengaging releasable latch means carried by the cover member and the outer transverse edge of said block member.
