The present invention relates to improvements in vise jaws with retractable bushings. It embodies subject matter divided from my copending application on Work-Centering Vise Having Toggle-Locked Pivoted Jaws, Serial No. 269,841, filed in the United States Patent Office on February l, 1952, now Patent No. 2,645,961, dated July 21, 1953.
More specifically, I provide a pair of coasting jaws having bushings therein adapted to grip and hold interposed objects. In order to accommodate these jaws to a. large variety of objects having various diameters, I make use of a series of interchangeable bushings for the jaws.
An object of this invention is to provide improved means for removably anchoring the bushings to the jaws so as to retain the bushings firmly in place, yet permitting the latter to be removed easily and rapidly.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the specification continues. Th novel features will be set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Figures 3 and 4. are detached views of the jaws I and bushing sections, respectively.
While I have shown only the preferred form of my invention, it should be understood that various changes, or modifications, may be made within the scope of the annexed claims without departing from the spirit thereof.
Detailed description Referring to the drawings, I provide a pedestal indicated generally at A having a fixed jaw B welded or otherwise secured to the top thereof. Moreover, a movable jaw C is arranged to coact with the fixed jaw for gripping and holding an object D therebetween when those jaws are forced toward one another by a lever handle E.
It will be noted that a pair of links In and hinge pins H swingably interconnect rear portions of the two jaws, the jaw Cbeing movable into separated relation with respect to the fixed jaw B; also, the movable jaw C may be brought into overlying relation with respect to the fixed jaw.
As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, a pair of front links !2 are hinged secured by a pin M to a forward part of the movable jaw C. The lever handle E, previously mentioned, is disposed between these iront links and pivoted thereto by a hinge pin I5. At the forward end of the fixed jaw B, there is provided 2. lug It having a recess ll formed in its underneath surface. The lever handle is made with a fulcrum projection I8 arranged to engage with the lug recess I! for forcing the jaws toward each other when the handle is swung in a clockwise direction about its hinge pin 15; that is, into the position disclosed in Figure 1.
Figure 1 discloses the longitudinal axes 19 of the front links l2 as being disposed rearwardly of a center point 25 of an area of contact between the fulcrum projection and the recess II when prying end 2! of the lever handle abuts the underneath surface of the lug l6. Accordingly, a toggle-like arrangement is formed, thereby automatically locking the jaws B-C in clamping relation upon the gripped object D. However, this grip may be readily released by swinging the handle it in a counterclockwise direction.
Both jaws of the vise are provided with semicylindrical saddles 22, which are adapted to receive curved interchangeable bushing sections F. The latter define concave confronting gripping surfaces 23 arranged to be positioned on opposite sides of the gripped object D. It will be seen that the rear and front links Ill and I2, respectively, permit shifting of the movable jaw C lengthwise relative to the fixed jaw B for centering the gripping surfaces 23 on the object. This is important, sinc the object is not always perfectly round.
Of course, the bushings may be made in various sizes so as to grip objects of different diameters. For the purpose of removably securing the bushing sections in the jaws of the vise, these jaws have fixed pins 24 adapted for projecting into openings 25 provided in one side of the bushing sections. Also, retractable pins 25 are arranged to extend into openings 27 in the op posing sides of the bushing sections.
The retractable pins 26 project from the forward ends of the jaws B-C, and have operating knobs 28 exposed for manual grasping to retract these pins and thereby free the bushing sections for removal from the jaws. Compression springs 29 normally urge the pins 26 inwardly of the jaw saddles 22 so as to extend into the openings 2! of the bushing sections, as shown in Figur 3.
When applying the bushing sections to the saddles of the jaws, they are inclined and introduced thereinto so that the fixed pins 24 will enter the openings 25 first; thereafter, the bushing sections are rotated slightly and moved against the saddles, and then the pins 26 are engaged in the openings 21. The pins 24 and 26 will retain the bushing sections in the jaws, even though the vise may be thrown about rather violently.
It will be observed that the openings 25 and 2! are disposed parallel with and adjacent to confronting side edges a of the bushing sections. Moreover, the pins 24 and 26 in 'eachjaw are arranged in alignment with one another, and parallel a plane b extending across the outer side edges a of the bushing sections. ThiS'COIlStluCr tion will allow either side of a bushing section to be engaged over a stationary pin 24, and then the remaining side inserted over the retractable pin 26.
The front links .12 havesufficient length for the, prying end 2| to clear the operating knobs 280i the retractable pins when the handleis .dise engaged from'the lug I 6 and moved past these knobs. The latter are arranged at the front ends ofthe jaws so as to beconvenient for grasping by an individual standing at that side of-the vise.
I claim: 7
1. In a device of the character described: a jaw having a bushing-receiving saddle; an inter .changeable bushing section removably inserted .J'aw having a bushing-receiving saddle; an interchangeable bushing section removably inserted into this saddle, and having an object-embracing surface; a .figged pin anchored to the jaw, and
made to project into an opening fashioned at one sidepf "thebushing section; and a springpressedretractable pin carried by the jaw, and
movableinto an opening at the opposite side of the bushing section to anchor the latter to the jaw; both of these pins being mounted in parlel endaxia e ienm n wi h vo anq h the retractable pin projecting froman, adjacent end of the jaw, and having means on the projecting portion of the pin operable for retractingthis pin to thereby release the bushing section for removal.
