1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in pullers, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, such as may be conveniently and effectively employed for the removal of cable terminals from the terminal posts of wet batteries, such as are commonly employed in automobiles and similar vehicles.
A further object of the invention is to provide a puller which may be easily manipulated and which will not, in any way, damage the terminal or post to which it is applied.
Another object of the invention is to provide a puller which is simple in construction and which will not easily become damaged.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a puller which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture and which is otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a further elevational view, taken in the direction of the arrow 2 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an under side plan view of the invention per se as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a plan view of a cross member used in the invention, and
Figure 5 is an elevational view of an adjustable head used in the same.
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a. puller designated generally by the reference character H], the same embodying in its construction a pair of levers l configurated substantially as shown and pivotally connected together medially of their length by means of a cross member l2.
This cross member is best illustrated in the accompanying Figure 4, and it will be noted that it is provided with a pair of recesses [3 adapted to receive the levers I I, the latter being pivotally secured thereto by suitable pins or rivets l4. The cross member I2 is also formed with a central aperture or bore l5, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully explained.
An arcuate handle I6 is pivotally connected at one end thereof by a' rivet or pin H to one end of each of the levers H, while the remaining end portions of the levers constitute a. pair of co-acting jaws Hi. It will be noted that the free extremities of these jaws are equipped with inturned flanges IS, the function of which will also be hereinafter more fully described.
A plunger 20 is slidably positioned in the bore I5 of the cross member I2, one end of the plunger being provided with a screw threaded bore to receive a similarly threaded shank 2| of an adjustable head 22. This head is disposed intermediately of the jaws I8, as is best shown in Figures 1 and 3.
A pair of connecting links 23 are pivotally attached by means of a rivet 24 to the remaining end of the plunger 20, the free extremities of the links 23 being pivoted as at 25 to the midportions of the handles [6. Finally, a suitable compression spring 26 is positioned on the plunger 20, one end of the spring bearing against the cross member l2, while its remaining end bears against the links 23.
When the invention is placed in use, the puller is applied so that the cable terminal 21 is gripped by the jaws l8 and the flanges l9 engage the underside of the terminal, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
It will be found that by compressing the handles I6 together, the jaws [8 will be caused to firmly grip the terminal, this being facilitated by the resiliency of the spring 20 which will cause the handles IE to pivot about the pins 25 and the levers l l to pivot about the pins l4.
After the terminal 21 is securely gripped and no further movement of the jaws I8 is possible, continuous pressure tending to draw the handles i6 together will overcome the resiliency of the spring 26 and as a result, the handles IE will pivot about the pins I! and the plunger 20 will be urged in the direction of the arrow 21 through the medium of the links 23. At the same time, the head 22 will, of course, bear against the post 28 of the battery 29 and since the post will remain stationary, the flanges [9 will effectively pull the terminal 21 from the post, as will be clearly understood.
It should be noted that the head 22 may be readily adjusted by means of the screw threaded shank 2|, so as to facilitate contact of the head with the post 28, after the flanges l9 are in engagement with the underside of the terminal 21.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the 3 foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is considered unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What we claim as our invention is:
In a puller of the class described, the combination of a pair of levers provided at one end there.- of with a pair of opposed gripping jaws, a cross member having each end thereof pivoted toan. intermediate portion of one of said levers, a pair of handles each pivoted at one .end thereof to the remaining end of its corresponding lever, a
plunger slidable in said cross member, a pair of links each pivoted at one end thereof to an intermediate portion of its corresponding handle, and a common pivot connecting the remaining ends of said links to said plunger.
