Description
W L A SUTHE RLAND v 7 2,037,834
CLAMP FULLER Filed Sept. 5, 1955 patented Apr. 21, 1936 PATENT OFFlE The invention comprehends a tool specially de signed for pulling off the cable clamp or connector from a storage battery. Difficuity is frequently encountered in attempting to detach the clamp or connector from a battery post owing to its seizing or adhering to the post and the attendant likelihood of damaging the battery should the post he strained.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a puller having a pair of jaws that hook under the clamp and a pusher bar that abuts the top of the battery post. By squeezing a pair of levers an upward pull is exerted on the jaws and at the same time a counteracting force is applied on the post to relieve it of strain. Adequate purchase is furnished to pull off the clamp While the battery is on its support in the automobile.
The invention is comparatively simple of construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
Referring to the accompanying drawing. Figure 1 illustrates the invention in position over a battery clamp ready to remove it.
Figure 2 is a sub-assembly view showing the pusher bar and one of the jaws on an actuating lever.
Figure 3 is an edge view of the pusher bar.
Figure 4 is a cross section taken on line 44 of Figure 2.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures of the drawing.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 5 denotes a conventional storage battery of which one of the two terminal posts is indicated at 5. The post is shown fitted with the usual clamp 6 or what is frequently termed a connector, which serves to attach a cable to the post. The clamp is supplied with a fastening element which of course is loosened in detaching the clamp.
The puller comprises a pair of levers 6 having handle portions i and pivotally connected together for movement in scissor fashion. A bolt 8 may be used for the pivot. The head end of each lever is enlarged as at 9 and a jaw it is pivoted to each lever slightly to the rear of the fulcrum 8, the pivotal connection preferably being constituted by a bolt as at l i.
Each jaw consists of a depending finger having an inturned hook terminus l2 adapted to engage the underface of the clamp ii. The jaws are free to swing to and away from each other in the plane in which the levers operate.
The pusher bar It is disposed between the jaws and has a blunt head l4 adapted to abut the top of the post 5'. Upwardly of the head M, the pusher bar is bifurcated to straddle the levers.
Each leg of the bifurcated portion is slotted inwardly from the upper end as at l5 so as to allow the headed bolt 8 to fit therein. This forms a guide for the pusher bar.
A pair of links it is pinned by a bolt ill or the like in the intermediate portion of the pusher bar so as to occupy the portion of the bifurcation below the levers. The links extend outwardly and upwardly in diverging directions and are pivoted to the respective heads of the lever at ii" forwardly of the fulcrum thereof. The links form a toggle joint with the heads of the levers in order to downwardly urge the pusher bar as the levers are pressed towards each other. It will be noted that the slots l5 by their engagement with the fulcrum bolt 8 preclude the pusher bar from turning askew on the bolt ll. The arcuate slots l8 provide clearance for the bolts H in the movement of the levers.
In the use of this tool, it is placed as shown in Figure 1 over the battery with the pusher bar resting on top of the post. The jaws are hooked under the clamp and then the levers are pressed together. The inward movement of the levers pulls upwardly on the jaws and presses downwardly on the pusher rod by means of the link connections. The jaws thus force the clamp off the post while the pusher rod relieves the strain of the battery.
What I claim is:-
1. A clamp puller comprising a pair of levers fulcrumed for movement to and away from each other, jaws carried by the levers for hooking un der a clamp, a pusher bar extending outwardly from the fulcrum of the levers, a pair of links pivoted to the pusher bar at a common point, said links divergently extending and being pivoted to the levers in advance of their fulcrum, and means for precluding the pusher bar from turning askew on its pivotal connection with the links.
2. A clamp puller comprising a pair. of levers, a fastening element pivotally securing the levers adjacent'an end thereof, the ends of said fastening element protruding from the outer faces of said levers, a jaw pivoted to each lever rearwardly of the fulcrum pivot of the lever, each jaw being elongated and having a hook terminus, a pusher bar having a blunt head at one end and substantially bifurcated, the bifurcation having slots in which the protruding ends of the aforesaid fastening element are lodged, and a pair of links pivoted to the medial portion of the pusher bar and divergently extending to the levers, said links being pivoted to the levers in advance of their fulcrum pivot to form a toggle joint.
3. A clamp puller comprising a pair of levers fulcrumed for movement to and away from each other, jaws carried by the levers for hooking under a clamp, a pusher bar extending outwardly from the fulcrum of the levers, a pair of links pivoted to the pusher bar at a common point, said links divergently extending and being pivoted to the levers in advance of their fulcrum, and means for precluding the pusher bar from turning askew on its pivotal connection with the links, said means being constructed and arranged to compose a guide at the fulcrum point of the levers so as to constrain the pusher bar to a reciprocable movement.
4. A clamp puller comprising a pair of levers fulcrumed for movement to and away from each other, jaws carried by the levers for hooking under a clamp, a pusher bar extending outwardly from the fulcrum of the levers, a pair of links pivoted to the pusher bar at a common point, said links divergently extending and being pivoted to the levers in advance of their fulcrum, and means for precluding the pusher bar from turning askew on its pivotal connection with the links, said means consisting of an element of the pusher bar disposed across the fulcrum of the levers, and a member laterally protruding from said fulcrum and having a positive guiding relation with said element.
