Description

l H. o. McMlLLAN WIRE CUTTING DEVICE Filed Ju1y2o, 1927 f g i 6 ,MMMWZICM Patented Jan. 29, 1929.
UNITED STATESA HOWARD 0. MCMILLAN, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
vWIRE-enteritis DEVICE.
Application filed J'uly 20,
This invention relates to a. Cutting devine and while the device is capable of many uses it particularlyhas been designed for cutting wire. In concrete work a great deal of wireA is used for tying the forms or other purposes, much of which must be cut to cer-- tain lengths. The present device has been designed particularly for cutting such wire.
It is an object of this invention to provide l0 a simple device which can be easily .and quickly operated to cut wires to the desired length.
It is another object of the invention to provide a simple wire cutting device adapted to be attached to some suitable support having a base plate for said purpose on which upstands a post. This post is adapted to receive a fixed knife and a movable knife and to have pivoted therein at its upper end a handle 2 lever, the lever and movable knife projecting to the rear of said post and being connected by a link, means preferablybeing provided to pull the link downwardly toward lthe base to maintain the knives in open position.
l5 It is also an object of the invention to provide a device as above set forth in which the normally fixed knife can be adjusted and held in adjusted position. f
These and other objects and advantages of the inventionwill be apparent from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of the device;
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the device; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrow.
Referring to the drawings, a cutting device is shown comprising a base plate 5. lVhile this plate may be of various shapes, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the same is shown as substantially rectangular in shape with rounded corners and as having a plurality of holes 5EL therethrough adjacent said corners, which holes are adapted to receive means for securing the base to some suitable support. Said base also has a projecting lug 5b at its rear end for a purpose to be later described. The base 5 has a post 6 upstanding therefrom disposed substantially at the transverse Center of said base and toward one end thereof, said 1927. Serial No. 207,264.
post having a narrow slot or aperture 6 extending longitudinally therethrough immediately above the base 5 and having an open ended slot 6 extending longitudinally therethrough at its upperend. said upper end thus being' forked or bifurcated. Post 6 has a lug 6c of comparatively small height extending forwardly therefrom, which lug has a slot extending longitudinally therethrough of the same width as and aline-d with the aperture 6a. A normally fixed knife 7 is disposed in the aperture 6a and the slot in lug 6, said knife being of awidth substantially to -lit in said aperture and slot and being lixedly held in position by engagement therewith of a set screw 8 threaded into one side of the post 6. `As shown, in Fig. 3, knife 7 is provided with a beveled er sharpened upper edge. The knife 7 can be raised when the same becomes worn by placing thereunder one or more shiins 9. A movable knife 10 also extends through aperture 6n and is pivoted on a headed and nutted bolt 11 extending through the post 6. As shown in Fig. 3, the knife 10 has its lower edge beveled or sharpened. The knife 10 projects rearwardly from post 6 over the base 5 and is received in the lower bifurcated end of link 12, being pivoted to said link by the pin 13, which pin is' held in position by the cotter pins 14 extending therethrough. A lever 15 is disposed in the forked top of post 6 having a forwardly extending handle portion 15a of considerable length, said lever extending rearwardly of post 6 substantially parallel to the knife 1() and having its rear end received in the upper bifurcated end of link 12. The lever 15 is pivoted to post 6 by the headed and nutted bolt 16 passing therethrough and through post 6 and is pivoted to link 12 by the pin 17, which pin is held in place by the cotter pins 18. The link 12 has an apertured lug 12a project-ing rearwardly from its intermediate portion to which is connected the upper end of a coiled tension spring 19, the lower end of which is connected to apertured lug 5z projecting upwardly from the lug 5b.
In operation the wire or other material to be cut will be inserted between the separated forward ends of the knives 7 and 10.
The spring 14 normally pulls down on .link 12 and the rear end of lever 15, thus elevating the front end of knife 10 and holding the knives in separated position. When the wire is inserted between the knives 7 and l() (ill the operator will push downwardly on the forward end of the handle 15a, thus raising link 12 and the rear end of knife 10, causing the front end of said knife to move downwardly, bringing the sharpened edge thereof down to the edge of the fixed knife and cutting off the wire or other material. It will be seen that a very great leverage is obtained by the lever l5 and the movable knife. The material is thus very easily eut. The device in practice is fastened to a bench, plank or other suitable support and can be very quickly operated. rllhe wires for use with the concrete can be cut with much less effort and much more sped than with the hand pliers commonly heretofore used.
From the foregoing description it is seen that applicant has provided a very simple and efficient device for cutting wire or other small material. rlhe device comprises few parts and the same can be made and sold at comparatively small expense. rllhe device has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and has been found to be very successful.
It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention which, generally stated, consists in the novel parts and combinations of parts disclosed and deiined in the appended claims.
lWhat is claimed is:
l. A cutting device comprising a base, an integral post upstanding from the forward portion thereof having an aperture extending longitudinally therethrough immediately above said base and having a slot extending longitudinally through its upper end and open at the top thereof, a fixed knife in said aperture resting on said base, means in said post for holding said knife in fixed position, a movable knife extending through said aperture and pivoted to said post above said fixed knife adapted to co-operate therewith and extending to the rea-r of said post, -a lever disposedin said slot in the upper end of said post and pivoted thereto having a handle portion of comparatively great length extending forwardly from said post, said lever extending rearwardly from said post, a link having bifurcated ends in which the rear ends of said lever and movable knife are respectively received and pivoted, and means for normally holding the rear end of said lever downwardly and maintaining said knives separated.
2. A cutting device comprising a base, a post upstanding` from said base having a lug at .its forward end, said post and vlug being provided with a slot which extends through said post longitudinally thereof, a fixed knife resting in the bottom of said slot in said post and base7 having its rear end substantially at the rear end of said post, a movable knife extending through the slot in said post and pivoted therein, said movable knife extending rearwardly over said base, a lever pivoted in the upper end of said post, extending substantially parallel to said movable knife and extending to the rear of said post and having a handle portion extending forwardly of said post and a link connecting the rear ends of said lever and movable knife.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HOWARD O. MCMILLAN.
