To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FENLEY, Sr., of Tolosa, Kaufman county, Texas, have invented 'a new and useful Improvement in Horseshoes, of which the following is a full,

clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specicatiomin which similar letters ot reference indicate correspondingparts in all the figures.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the application of shees to horses feet, and also to protect the hoofs of horses feet from injury.

The invention consists in a horseshoe constructed with a base made in two part-s, hinged together at their forward ends, and having a cap, also made in two parts, attached to the base, the parts of the cap being provided at their upper forward corners with eyes and a fastening-staple, and the hinged parts ot' the base being locked in place by a screwrod passing through the hinged end of the base, whereby the shoe can be readily applied and detached, and will be securely held in place, as will be hereinafterfully described.

Thel base of the shoe is made in two parts, A B, the forward ends ot'which are made Wide, and are slatted transversely upon their inner edges to interlock with eachother and form a hinge with three lugs, more or less. The pintle C ot' the hinge passes through all the lugs of the parts A B, and may have a screw-thread formed upon its inner end to screw into the inner lug, or into a nutscrev'ved upon its inner end, or may have its-inner end headed down or riveted. The lower sides ofthe ends of the lugs of the parts A B are beveled, as shown in Figs. 4 and, and the bottoms of the slots are correspondinglybeveled, so that the parts A B cannot swing upward upon the pintle O farther than into a horizontal position, and cannot cause the shoe to pinch the To the outer edges of the parts A B of the base are welded, soldered, riveted, or otherwise securely attached the parts D E of the cap, which parts are inclined inward and are so formed as to fit the hoofsnugly and neatly. The cap is made ot thin iron, and the forward edges of its parts D E abut against each other, and have eyes F formed `upon or attached to their upper corners to receive the arms of a staple or bent wire, G. The staple G is locked in place in the eyes F by bending the ends of its arms, or by slott'ing the said ends and inserting a thin key, or in any other convenient manner. The shoe is further locked in place, when upon the hoof, by a rod, H,Which passes transversely through the hinged forward ends of the parts A B, and has a screw-thread formed upon its forward end to screw into a screw-thread in the vbottom of'the hole into which the said screw-rod is inserted.

With this construction the shoe can be easily and quickly applied to and detached from a horses foot by removing the screw-rod H and fastening Gr, and when applied to the foot will be held irmly in place by the said screw-rod and fastening. This shoe has the further advantage of protecting the hoof and preventing the hoof from spreading or cracking.

In a horseshoe, the Vbase A B, made in two parts hinged to each other by parallel arms having beveled ends, and a pintle, C, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the upward movement of the said parts above a horizontal plane is prevented, as set forth.

2. 1n`a horseshoe, the' combination, with the hinged base A B, of the two-part cap D E, having fastening F G, substantiallyas herein shown and drscribed,rwhereby the shoe can be readily applied and detached and will be rmly held in place, as set forth.

3. In a horseshoe, the combination, with the hinged base A B, having cap D E, ofthe screw-rod H, substantially ns herein shown and described, whereby the said hinged parts are locked in place, as set forth.
