To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK F. STANEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Howell, in the county of Colfax and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in horseshoes, and more particularly to that class of horseshoes having removable calks, the object belng to provide a horseshoe which is exceedingly strong in construction and one in whlch the calks are so mounted that they can be readily attached or detached, and when in position are held firmly in place without the use of fastening members of any kind.
Another object of my invention is to provide a horseshoe which is strengthened at the toe and heel portions by enlarging the same.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a shoe which is formed of such a shape that the same will conform to the shape of the foot of the animal to which it is secured, and one which is provided with the usual openings to receive the nails for securing the same.
A still further object of the invention is to provide the enlarged portions of the shoe with tapering dove-tail shaped grooves in which are adapted to fit the clove-tail shaped heads of calks which are placed therein from the inside of the shoe and locked in position by being forced outwardly in such a manner that they will be held in their adjusted positions without any danger of the calks becoming detached when in use, as the tendency of the calks of a horseshoe are to work outwardly, whereby the calks will become more firmly secured after they-have been used.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved horseshoe. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the toe portion of the shoe.
In carrying out my improved invention I employ a horseshoe proper A, preferably formed of steel which is provided with an enlarged toe-portion B and heel portions C, the enlarged toe portion being provided with a nail receiving opening B, and the horseshoe proper with nail receiving openings A, for securing the same to the hoof of an animal in the ordinary manner. The enlarged portion B is provided with a central notch B which communicates with tapering dove-tailed shaped grooves B extending transversely through the enlarged portion, and in which are adapted to be placed dove-tailed shaped heads D of calks D which are substantially square in cross section and are provided with pointed ends, as clearly shown. While I have shown and described these calks square, it is of course understood that they could be formed round and provided with dove-tailed shaped heads. In placing the calks in position within the grooves, they are inserted through the notch and forced outwardly by a punch until they are wedged by the tapering grooves, in such a manner that they will be held without any danger of them slipping. Dove-tailed shaped grooves O are also formed in the enlarged heel portions C extending substantially longitudinally with the side bars of the shoe, and are formed tapering in a similar manner to the grooves of the toe portions, and in which are adapted to be driven from the inside calks D, and it will be seen that the grooves are of the same size whereby calks of the same size and shape are used for the heel calks as well as the toe calks.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A horseshoe provided with an enlarged toe portion having a central notch in its inner edge, said notch communicating with tapering dove-tailed shaped grooves, and calks having dove-tailed shaped heads adapted to be inserted in said grooves through said notch and forced outwardly.
