HORSESHOE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,733, dated October 20,

Be it known that I, J OSEPH BROONETT, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Horseshoe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in horseshoes; and the object of my invention is to produce a shoe of simple construction, which can be quickly clamped upon the hoof of a horse and as quickly removed, which will preserve the hoof from injury, and which obviates the use of nails.

To this end my invention consists of a horseshoe constructed substantially as hereinafter described and claimed. 7

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming-a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in-both the views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe embodying my invention, showing the same at tached to a horses foot; and Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective View of the shoe and foot.

The shoe proper 10 is composed of two similar parts, which are shaped substantially like the half of a common shoe, and these parts are hinged together at the front, as shown at 11. The parts 10 have secured to their upper edges thin metallic shields 12, which approximate in shape to the shape of a horses hoof, and which at their front edges are formed into interlocking knuckles 13, through which apintle 13 is thrust to form the hinge; and it will thus be seen that the shoe will be made in two hinged parts, which may be easily opened when the shoe is to be placed upon the horses hoof. Extending around the upper edges of the shields 12 are bands 14, which at the rear extremities of the two sides of the shoe are doubled inward, so as to project behind the heel of a horse, and the bands terminate in flanges 15, which are adapted to receive a clamping-bolt 16, and one of the flanges is screw-threaded, so that the bolt maybe screwed into it.

To attach the shoe it is simply clamped upon the hoof of the horse, the bolt 16 is thrust through one of the flanges 15 and screwed into the opposite flange, and by tight ening the bolt the shoe will be firmly clamped upon the hoof. It is well known that the hoof is smaller at the top than at the bottom, and as the shields of the shoe correspond in shape to the shape of the hoof, it will readily be seen that it will be impossible for the shoe to become accidentally detached.

To'apply the shoe the hoof should be pared in the ordinary way to bring it to the desired shape, and the shoe is then clamped upon it in the manner described.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Ahorseshoe comprisingtwo similar parts hinged together at the toe, shields secured to and projecting from the parts of the shoe and hinged together at the front, bands secured to the upper edges of the shields, and aclainping-bolt for connecting the ends of the bands, substantially as described.

2. A horseshoe consisting of two similar parts hinged together at the toe, shields 12, secured to the parts of the shoe and provided at the front with interlocking knuckles 13, through which pass the pintle-13 the bands 14, extending around the upper edge of the shields and provided with the flanges 15, one of which is screw-threaded, and the clamping-bolt 16, substantially as herein shown and described.
