BUTTER PACKAGE.
No. 267,616. Patented Nov. 14, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES TOMLINSON, OF OHATHAM, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK Gr. SMITH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
BUTTER-PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,616, dated November 14, 1882,
' Application filed August 25, 1882. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES TOMLINSON, of Ohatham, in the county of Kent and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Butter-Packages; and Idohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in themanut'acture ofcylindrically-shapedpackages made of wood, and more especially adapted for but- Ier, cheese, lard, and other articles which are apt to be affected in their flavor when kept any length of time in contact with the wood.
Figure l is a view in section of myimproved package adapted to be used as a butter-firkin. Fig. 2 is a detail showing a removable cylinder, which is designed to lit within the butterfirkin. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the top, the cover being removed, of one of my improved butter-firkins when filled. v
In the accompanyingdrawings, Arepresents a cylinder formed of two or more thicknesses of veneers. It'of two thicknesses, the grain of one shouldrun atrightangles, ornearlyso, tothatof the other veneer. it of three thicknesses, the grain of theintermediateveneer should run at right angles to that of the outer and inner veneers, to afford requisite strength. Abottoln is inserted in the cylinder, andsecured in any desired and convenient way. Theinteriorof the cylinder is then coated with a thin and even coatingotthefollowing compound: aboutt'our parts of paraffine-wax and one part of resin,
melted and thoroughly mixed together. The cover B fits the top of the box, and is the full size of the diameter of the cylinder A, and the under side of the cover israbbeted to fit the 40 interior of the cylinder. I employ a cylinder,
D, without heads, and made from a single piece of veneer, and of a little smaller diameter than the interior of the cylinder A, and a little shorter than that cylinder, and insert it 5 within the cylinder A. The butter is then packed within the inner cylinder, and when this is filled the top is covered with the compound, when the package is ready to receive the cover. lNhen it is desired to remove the the contents intact the cover is removed and the box turned upside down,,and then raised, when the inner cylinder, with its contents, will slip out and be left standing. The inclosing cylinder D may then be easily slipped 011 or otherwise removed from the mass, leaving the contents in a compact form.
What I claim as myinvention is- The combination of the cylindrical box or package, the movable cylindrical inner cas- 6o ing, made somewhat shorter than the depth of the package as shown and the rabbeted head adapted to be supported partly on the walls of the package and partly on the inner casing, whereby an angular bearing is formed for the head that may be tightly closed by a film of plastic material, while retaining the casing and contents in position. substantially as set forth.
JAMES TOMLINSON.
