Description

WILLIAM J. CLARK, or LENA, ILLINo-rsf Lette/rs Patent No. 100,857, dated March 15, 1870.
j IMPROVEMENT m nee-CARRIERS.
` The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making peut o! the, same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. CLARK, of Lena, in the county of Stephenson, and State of Illinois,
' have invented a new and useful Improvement in Egg- Garrier; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full `and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and tothe letters of reference` marked thereon.
'This invention has for its object the production of an egg-holder for carrying purposes which shall have Figure 1 represents a keg with the side partially broken away toshow the layers of the egg-holders;
. Figure 2 represents a side elevation lof' au eggholder having a single compartment; 1
Figure 3'represents the same holder with its ends detached from each other and the strip flattened;
` Figure 4 represents a plan view of aholder with two compartments; Y y
Figure 5, a view of the strip forming the same, spread ont; vand y i Figure 6, a plan view of one of' the pieces used to separate thelayers.
` To enable others skilled in the nrt to which iny'inventi'on appertains to make and use the same, I will nowdescribe fully the' `manner of constructing and using the same.l 1
A represents a strip of anyl suitable material, which is provided` with the slits a a. When in use the projection formed by cutting the slit w is passed through theslit a', by means of which a circular box is formed, as shown in fig. 2. If desired,.a box with two compartments may be formed, as `shown in figs. 4 and-5.
`B represents a-strip which is cut at b b1 b2 b3. When in use the stripis turned upon itself in the center, and the parts at b1 b2 and at b b are slipped together.4 By
this means a box with two compartments, as shown in fig. 4, is formed.
lThese holders thus formed may be used with especial advantage in round packages, such as kegs or bar-V rels, in which it is well'known that eggs can be most economically shi-pped, from the fact that such packages are usually handled by rolling them, While boxes areA subject to being thrown over with great force.
By the employment of independent compartments, also, great economy of` space is gained, as no room large enough to receive a holder need be wasted.
rlhe holders are arranged in. layers and filled with eggs, each layer being separated by a division-board, as shown in fig. 6. ,If desired, oats, chaff, or` other suitable material may also be used as additional protection, after the holders have been filled.
. It will be observed that between each egg, on all sides, are placed two independent thicknesses ot' material..
After the transportation of the package to its dosired destination the holders are removed, their ends detached, and the strips flattened out and formed into a compact package for reshipment.
The advantages gained by employing lthis holdern may be stated as follows: Round packages may be used; no space is wasted; the eggs are protected by double walls; and the holders may be reshipped'at-a small expense. Tubs or boxes may be used if preferred.
Having thus fully described my invention,
` What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lets,
t-ers Patent, is
Au egg-carrier consisting of a single strip of proper material, having its end slit in such manner as to Ybe capable of being united to form an independent box, and again disconnected when desired for shipping purposes, substantially `as described, for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 25th day of January, .1870.
W. J. CLARK.
