To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, IVAR E. Evans, a subject of the King of Sweden, and residing at Edgewater, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg Boxes or Crates, of which the following is a speciiication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relate to boxes or crates for use in packing eggs for shipment or other purposes, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive and in which eggs may be packed for shipment and other purposes, without danger of breaking said eggs, and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a box or crate of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an egg box or crate made according to my invention and showing the cover removed; Fig. 2 a parti al section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a view of a transverse partition member which I employ detached from the box or crate; and, Fig. 4 a similar view of a longitudinal partition member which forms a part of the box or crate.

In the practice of my invention, I provide a box or crate a which is preferably rectangular in form and also preferably oblong, and which comprises a main body or bottom part I), and a removable cover 0 beneath which is placed a supplemental reinforcing cover (Z, consisting of corrugated board of the usual form, and comprising a bottom sheet (Z and a top corrugated sheet (Z The main body or bottom part comprises a body 6 ends 6 and sides I), and adjacent to each side I) and centrally of said bottom or body part are tions 6, one of which is shown detached in Fig. 4. The main body or bottom part b is also provided with transverse partitions f, one of which is shown detached in Fig. 3, and these partitions f are arranged adjaof which the accomplaced longitudinal particent to the ends 6 of the main body or bottom part, and two pairs of said transverse partitions are arranged intermediate of the ends as shown at f and this arrangement of said partitions forms egg chambers g, six of which are employed in the construc tion shown, and this arrangement of longitudinal and transverse partitions forms at the sides of the box or crate longitudinal spaces it, and at the ends thereof similar transverse spaces 72?, and intermediate transverse spaces 72. together with corner spaces h and this reinforces the box or crate and makes it strong and substantial, while also separating and keeping distinct and independent the egg chambers g.

The longitudinal partitions e are provided in one edge portion thereof with trans verse slots 6 and the transverse partitions f are provided in one edge portion thereof with corresponding slots f whereby the said partitions may be unlocked in the usual manner, and cut from the transverse partitions f are folding flaps 7, two of which are adapted to fold downwardly into each of the egg chambers g, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the body portions of these flaps are circular in form and provided with neck portions f and this forms in said partitions f circular openings f which open outwardly through the top edges of said transverse partitions, as shown at f, and the neck portions f of the folding flaps f are preferably beveled inwardly, and when said folding flaps are folded inwardly and downwardly, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the cover 0 and supplemental reinforcing cover d removed, the eggs z' may be inserted into the egg chambers 9 so that one end portion thereof will extend through the central opening f in one of the transverse partitions f, and the other end portion through the corresponding opening f in the opposite transverse partition f, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the eggs when thus inserted rest on the inwardly folding flaps f as is also clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the end portion of one of said flaps bears on the bottom of the box or crate and supports the eggs so that there is a vacant space j below each egg.

When the eggs have been placed in position, the inner reinforcing cover d is placed on the box or crate, after which the cover 0 is placed in position, vided with a skirt portion 0 which overlaps the ends and sides of the bottom or and said cover is pro-' body portion of the box or crate, and said cover 0 may be tied on, or secured in position in any desired manner.

In the accompanying drawing my improved egg box or crate is longer than it is wide, and is provided with only six egg chambers, but it will be understood that said box or crate may be made of any desired size and may contain any preferred number of said egg chambers, and a number of these boxes or crates may be packed together one upon another, and said boxes or crates may be carried or shipped either by mail, or by express with comparative safety, or without danger of breaking the eggs.

All the parts of my improved box or crate are preferably made of fibrous board or boards of fibrous material, and changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an egg box or crate, a main body portion having a removable cover, said main body portion being provided with partitions which cross each other and form egg chambers, opposite walls of which are provided with openings adapted to receive the ends of eggs placed in said chambers, said opposite walls being also provided with flaps which fold inwardly into said chambers, and said chambers being separated by narrow transverse spaces and the ends and sides of the box or crate being also provided with spaces corresponding with said chambers.

2. In an egg box or crate, a maih body portion provided with partitions which cross each other and form egg chambers, opposite walls of which are provided with openings adapted to receive the ends of eggs placed in said chambers, said opposite walls being also provided with flaps which fold inwardly into said chambers, and said chambers being separated by narrow transverse spaces and the ends and sides of the box or crate being also provided with spaces corresponding with said chambers, said main body portion being also provided with a cover and a supplemental inner detachable and reinforcing cover.
