To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that 1, JOHN VOLLAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shipping barrels and more particularly to means employed therein for binding the staves thereof about the barrel heads.
The object of my invention is to provide a vessel of such character which will be of novel and improved construction.
A further object is to provide a vessel as mentioned in which the staves thereof will be bound together by a single improved, adjustable, and readily applied hoop embodied in my invention, it being object to provide a barrel the parts of which in the manufacture or construction thereof may be readily and easily assembled.
A still further object is to provide a barrel as mentioned which will be of strong, durable, and economical construction.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in a barrel characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,

Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged detail perspectives of the contiguous overlapping ends of the hoop parts embodied in my invention. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse section through the barrel hoop taken on the line y-y of Fig. 2. Fig. 6. is an enlarged sectional detail of the bung hole bushing embodied in my construct-ion, illustrating the connection therewith of the forward extremities of the barrel hoop parts and Fig. 7. is a detail perspective of a for ward extremity of one of the hoop parts shown in Fig. 6.
Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates an ordinary barrel body comprised of the usual normally curved staves 2 and heads 8 (one only of the latter being shown) engaging said staves in any suitable manner.
4 indicates a bung hole provided in the barrel body midway the extremities thereof. Secured, preferably threaded, in said bung hole is a metallic bushing 5 formed at its outer extremity with a peripheral flange 6 of considerable width, said flange resting, when said bushing is correctly positioned in said bung hole in an engagement with the outer surface of said body. In order to prevent displacing of said bushing, more particularly reversed movement thereof when in arranged position, the inner surface 7 of said flange is formed preferably toothed in construction as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 6. Provided in the outer surface of said flange the same being preferably arranged to quarters therein, are preferably V formed notches 8. Encircling the body 1, the same serving as a means of binding said staves in position about the heads 3 is a two-part 100p 9 comprising the members 10 and 11. Formed upon the inner surfaces of the forward extremities of said heads 10 and 11 are hooked projections 12 adapted to snugly engage the notches 8 of the bushing flange 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 6. Formed upon the inner surface of the opposite end portion of the hoop part 10 are projections 13, preferably 2 in number, adapted to clovetail with slots 14 formed in the adjacent end portion of the hoop part 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. In order to effect circumferential adjustment of said hoop 9 said part 11 thereof is preferably provided with a plurality of such notches 14, it being evident that with such provision such adjustment of said hoop may readily be effected.
In applying the hoop, the forward extremities are first arranged in engaging position with the bushing 5, where upon the opposite extremities are arranged in dovetail connection as before described, with the hoop in an obliquely disposed position relative to the barrel staves. After such arrangement the rearward portion of the hoop is driven or forced down into a position as shown causing the barrel staves to be forced inwardly into close closing engagement with each other.
l/Vhile I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device, I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention comprehended within thescope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a barrel, the combination of longitudinally curved barrel staves; heads fitted to said staves; a metallic bushing secured in a centrally located bung hole With hoop engaging means, and a hoop or" a size to tightly fit said barrel at its largest diameter and provided with means adapted to engage said hoop engaging means, substantially as specified.
2. In a barrel, the combination of longitudinally curved barrel staves; heads fitted to said staves; a metallic bushing secured in a centrally located bung hole and provided with hoop securing notches; a two-part hoop provided at adjacent ends with projections adapted to take into said hoop securing notches; and adjustable means for securing the other ends of the hoop together, substantially as described.
3. In a barrel, the combination of longitudinally curved barrel staves; heads fitted to said staves; a metallic bushing secured in a centrally located bung hole and provided with hoop securing notches; a twopart hoop provided at adjacent ends with projections adapted to take into said hoop securing notches; and dovetailing notches and projections on the other ends of said hoop parts, substantially as described.
