Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENDERSON WILLARD, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVED BARREL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 102,346, dated April 26, 187.0.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENDERSON WILLARD, of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Iinprovementin Barrels and other Similar Packages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and sufficient description of the same, reference being had to the accompan yin g drawings, which make part of this specifn ation, and in which- Figure lis a side elevation, partially in section, of my improved barrel. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing a modification. Fig. 3 is a top view, showing my improved method of holding and fastening the heads of the barrel; and Fig. 4 is a top view of Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists of forming a barrel or oth er similar package of a double cylinder, an inner and an outer one, each consisting ot horizontal sections of strips or slabs ot'wood so arranged vertically above each other in each set that the spaces between the sections of the inner set will break joints with the spaces between the sections of the outer set, and vice versa, so as to form a perfectly-tight barrel or other similar package.
It further consists in a novellnode of attaching heads to such barrels by means of strips of wood or metal which pass between the inner and outer set of sections the length ot' the barrel or package, their ends, which extend be youd the ends of the barrel, being bent over inwardly and secured to the heads by nails or otherwise.
A B O in the drawings represent horizontal sections of strips or bands of wood or other suitable material, forming an inner cylinder, their ends overlapping and properly secured to each other. These sections are placed vertically above each other, and are of equal size, so that their inner and outer surfaces are perfectly flush. D E are similar sections, forming an outer cylinder, fitting around and of a greater height than sections A B G, so that the twoouter sections extend beyond the ends of the inner sections. It will be observed that by this arrangement the spaces between the sections A B Gare not :in .line with the space between sections D E, but break joints.
r In Fig. 2 I have Ishown a modication by placing three sections, A B C, on the outside of two sections, D E, and Ido not necessarily confine myself to the exact number shown, as for various purposes I may use a greater or less number of sections.
c e are strips of metal or wood, placed betweentheinnerandtheoutersectionsthelength of the barrel or package, and extending beyond the vends of thelatter. The head is then placed on the inner top or bottom section, oneat each end, and the strips a bent over and nailed down or otherwise secured, as shown in Fig. 3. These strips thus not only hold the heads of the barrel or package, but also bind the inner sections firmly upon each other.
In barrels or packages in which one endonly ot the same is to be closed the strips a may, be secured between the inner and outer sections at one end only by nails or other suitable means, and they need not extend the entire length of the package. As a greater strengthening, I split the projecting ends ot the strips a, and bend the part a outwardly over the edge ofthe outer section, fastening it to the same in a suitable manner, while the other part, ct, is secured on the head. Of course any suitable number of stripsmay be used. By this arrangement I am enabled to form a barrel with a chine, which would be v impossible were the strips left in one piece and applied from the outside.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A barrel or other similar package constructed of a double (an inner and an outer) Set of horizontal sections of strips or bands of wood or other suitable material so arranged vertically above each other in each set that the spaces between sections of the inner set will break joints with the spacesbetween sections of the outer set, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
2. The'strips of wood or other suitable material provided with split ends c a', when arranged between the inner and outer cylinders to hold the heads of a barrel or similar package, in the manner herein described.
HENDERSON WILLARD.
