Description
aient @Wine LEWIS L. GILLILAND, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 104,016, dated une 7, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-BOXES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part oi the same HON- able covers for boxes, in such a manner that the said cover shall be capable ot' being readily placed on and off'the box without nailing. A
My invention also relates to the connecting of sliding bars or bolts to the box, so as to operate in combination with the boxfor the purpose of locking the said cover on the said. box, the object of my invent-ion being to obviatc the necessity of' nailing the cover to the box, and thereby avoid t-he damages usually iuiiicted in closing and opening boxes.
The accompanying drawings represent my improved box, with but one sliding bar, designed for fruit, &c., but for larger and tight boxes I put on two sliding bars in a like manuel', one on or ucar each end or side of thc box.
Figure l is a drawing of the box when closed, embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan of the box without the cover, showing the sliding 'bar connected to the box by staples.
Figure 3 is a plan of the cover, showing the porvtions of its top removed for the sliding bars to work in.
Figure 41s a section or end drawing of the box when the cover is on and locked.
O O are the side-strips, nailed or screwed fast to. the
cover fitting over the sides of the box.
A is the sliding bar, fitting within the removed portions of the cover.
B B are the staples connecting the sliding bar to the box, through which staples the bar slides eudwise.
To put the cover ou the box, the bar must be shifted cndwise, sayabout one inch,or fully the thickness ofthe side-strip; then catch one of the side-strips through the opening of the cover, under the cud of the bar projecting outward; then press down the other side ot' the cover until the bar will drive back again and overlap the other side-strap, so as to hold it on.- '.lo rcmove the cover from the box, cioe cerca.
When I make my improved box to contain soap in blocks, or to contain any other article that is put up in packages, I remove a portion of the sides of the box equal to the width of the side-strips, so that't-he side strips fit on top of the sides of the box, instead of fitting' over the sides, thus preventing any projection of the cover over the box, the side-strips'bcing of the same thickness as the sides of the box.
C' latin.
I claim as my invention-'- The cover, having the central or end portions of its top removed, provided with side-strips O C fitting over the sides of the box, upon which it is locked by a bar, A, attached to the box by staples B B, through which it slides to overlap the side-straps of the cover, substantially as shown and described.
