To all whom t may concern: v I y Be it known that I, Jo'snrrr SBQSTRUNVK, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Mill Hall, in thel county of Clinton and lState of Pennsylvania, have invented .Certain new and useful Improvements in `SilofDoor Constructions; and I dodeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable kothers skilled in the art tol whichl 4it appertain's''to'inal rely and 'use the same.
` My invention has for its object to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive, yet a highly efficient and durable silo door and locking means therefor, and with this general object in view, the invention resides in the several novel features hereinafter fully described and claimed, lthe descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of the silo embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section on the plane of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4; is a perspective view of one of the doors.
In the drawing above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a silo of any preferred construction and including a pair of parallel Stiles 2 and 3 whose inner edges l are disposed on truly radial lines so that the necessity of beveling or otherwise shaping n these edges is obviated. Extending between the Stiles 2 and 3 at vertically spaced points, are horizontal bars 5 and located between each pair of said bars are two doors 6, all of said doors resting one upon the other and being located on the interior of the silo, `with their outer sides beveled at 7 for snug contact with the inner sides of the stiles 2 and 3 without the necessity of beveling said stiles as is commonly done. Since all of the doors 6 are identical, but one will be described in detail.
`To this end, the numeral S designates a vertical external cleat secured to` one end of the door `6 and having a beveled outer edge 9 for snug contact with-the inner edge tof the stile 3, so that inward movement of this end of the door is prevented. An additional cleat 10 is secured vertically'upon the outer side of the door 6 at its yother end and is located adjacent the edge 4 of the stile 2, but need not Contact therewith. Fulcrumed between its 'e'ndsutothis cleat lis' latch lever11havingon one end a cam nose 12 to engagean abutment'13 vsecured to the outer f sidefof the .stile ,2. in spaced relation-with itsfedge, ',saidzcam `also overlapping the outer side of thisstile to preventthis end ofthe doen/from beingforcedinwardly. Then thetfr'e'e end of the leverll is forced vk..dOFYl/n.wardlyg,the cam 12 `so thrusts against theabutmentflS as toforce thedoor 6endw'iset'o such an extent as to forcibly engage the cleat 8 with the stile 3. At the same time, an additional cam 12 on the portion of the lever opposite the cam 12, coacts with the cleat l0 to cant said lever 1n such amanner as to. pry the adjacent end of the door outwardly into tight engagement with the inner side of the stile Movement of the lever 11 to operative position also thrusts downwardly on the door 6 to an appreciable tion and may be quickly and easily opened when necessary. The ladder rungs 14 are preferably secured at their ends to the cleats S and 10 and thus serve as handles for the doors 6 when the latter are removed. Another featurel which is preferably though not necessarily employechis the provision of a single strip 13 extending from top to bottom of the silo for coaction with the latch levers 11, but it will be understoodL that individual abutments could well be employed if found desirable.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanyin drawing, it will be obvious that although t e invention is of extremely simple and inexpensive nature, it will bey highly efficient and Ldurable for the purposes intended. Since probably the best results are obtained from the several specific details shown and described, these details are by preference employed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may well'be made.
I claim: v l
1. The combination of the parallel -stiles of a silo, said stiles having their inner edges disposed on radial lines at right angles to their vinner and outer side's,a silo doory on the interiorof the silo' and having its outer side beveled at its ends, said beveled ends overlapping and contacting snugly with the inner sides of said Stiles, an external vertical cleat on one end of said door having a beveled outer edge at right angles to the bevel of this end of the door and contacting with the radially located edge of one of said stiles to prevent said end of the door from moving inwardly, an additional external vertical cleat on the other end of said door adjacent the other stile, an abutment on the outer side of this stile7 and a vertically swinging latch lever fulcrumed between its ends to said additional cleat, said lever having on one end a cam overlapping said last named stile to hold thevdoor against inward movement, said cam engaging said abutment the lever horizontally and thus pull the adjacent endof the door youtwardly into tight Contact with its respective stile.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. s Y
JOSEPHB. STRUNK.
